Which Feasts were Celebrated in the Fall Months/During Harvest?

In the Autumn, during Harvest, there were many feasts that were celebrated that were types of typologies that pointed to Jesus and His future coming to Israel.

  • Harvest of Firstfruits – God instructed the Israelites to bring the early crops and firstfruits of their harvest to the priests as offerings to the Lord (Leviticus 23:9-14).

This honored God as the ultimate provider.
  • Feast of Weeks/Pentecost – They were to celebrate the wheat harvest by observing the Feast of Weeks, also known as Pentecost. This included offerings and rest on the 50th day after Passover (Leviticus 23:15-21).

Tithes of the Harvest – The Israelites were to present a tenth of their harvest as tithes to support the Levites, who took care of the temple as their full time job. What a beautiful way to honor the Levites. (Deuteronomy 14:22-29).

Pentecost marked the conclusion and culmination of the Exodus from Egypt after 50 days and also the outpouring of the Holy Spirit on believers in Jerusalem on the Day of Pentecost.
  • Feast of Tabernacles – After the fall harvest, Israel was to celebrate the week-long Feast of Tabernacles/Booths. This recalled God’s provision during the wilderness wanderings (Leviticus 23:33-43).

When Jesus rode into Jerusalem on a donkey, it was during the feast of booths. As He rode into the city, the people waved palm branches in the air to welcome Him.
  • Gleaning – In the Bible, God commanded farmers to leave the edges of their fields unharvested for the poor to glean from. (Leviticus 23:22). This showed care for the needy.
  • Celebration and Rest – The harvest feasts were times of celebration, thanksgiving, and rest in God’s provision.

He called Israel to rejoice and honor Him.

What is God Saying in the Month of October?

The Jews celebrated the Harvest with festivals and rest. Could God be speaking to your heart saying that you need a time of rest and refreshment?

Tenth Month Mentioned in Scripture

Genesis 8:5 – “The waters continued to recede until the tenth month, and on the first day of the tenth month the tops of the mountains became visible.” This marked the subsiding of the flood waters during Noah’s time.

Esther 2:16 – “She was taken to King Xerxes in the royal residence in the tenth month, the month of Tebeth.”

This records when Esther was taken to King Xerxes before becoming queen. These are only my thoughts, and my thoughts alone, but I wonder if there is some nuance of prophecy in this Scripture about Esther going before the King and being Israel’s last hope and Jesus going before God as mankind’s last hope of salvation. It sure seems like it.

Ezekiel 24:1 – “In the ninth year, in the tenth month on the tenth day, the word of the Lord came to me.” Several key prophecies are spoken by Ezekiel. Ezekiel 29:1 and Ezekiel 33:21 again mention the tenth month.

Zechariah 8:19 – “This is what the Lord Almighty says: The fasts of the fourth, fifth, seventh and tenth months will become joyful and glad occasions…”

I love this messianic prophecy foretelling of the coming of the Messiah and how it would be a time of joy and gladness.

As we can see, the tenth month was associated with many key events and prophecies in Scripture concerning Esther, Ezekiel, Jerusalem’s fall, and the coming messianic kingdom. Many prophetic words came during that month.
