I was at a church fellowship (because where else do the best stories happen?), chatting with a young woman from our congregation, when she leaned in close with the most earnest expression.

“You know,” she said, “I really am one of the most humble people you’ll ever meet”.

I nearly choked on my bite of cake.

She continued, completely oblivious to the beautiful irony unfolding, “I’ve really gotten good at being humble and anyone will tell you.” I nearly choked on another bite of cake.

Bless her heart.

There she was, passionately declaring her credentials in humility while demonstrating the exact opposite. It was like watching someone announce how great they are at keeping secrets… loudly… in front of everyone.

It illustrated how she truly didn’t understand what humility was.

The goal is simply to become more like Jesus, one day at a time, one Scripture at a time, one surrendered moment at a time. And honestly, that’s a journey worth taking, even if it means occasionally laughing at ourselves along the way.
