[ Learn how to finally gain self control over your life with these Bible verses on Self Control ]
I covertly bought the yummy brownies and transferred them to a plastic container to hide the contents.
Yes, I really did that.
Then I took them to my office to eat them in secret where no one could see me devour the whole package.
Was it wrong that I was eating brownies? The normal person would say no. But I am a diet controlled type 2 diabetic who carefully watches what she eats to avoid medication and keep my blood sugar levels normal.
- But why was I keeping it a secret from my husband?
- Why was I eating to quash the difficult and emotional time that I was coping with.
- Why did I think that those luscious brownies would bring my soul lasting comfort?
- Why was I allowing food to become my comfort over God?
The answer in short is gluttony and my lack of biblical self control.
That one moment of binging led to another secret incident until I laid in bed that night to go to sleep with elevated blood sugar levels, feeling like I was going to die.
What made it worse was that the entire episode was self inflicted. Willingly.
My mind played five words over and over in my heart like a broken record player: I have no self control. I knew the consequences of my choices. How could I be so weak willed?
That’s when I cried out to God for help.
I needed some good old fashioned Bible self control.

Why we Need God’s Bible Verses on Self Control
Has food, anger, sleep, spending, money, social media, shopping or sex ever had mastery over your life to where you couldn’t get control over it? I’m assuming you’re nodding your head with me, right?
If we’re honest with ourselves, I’m sure we could all admit to self control issues both before and after salvation. Dealing with the flesh doesn’t come easy, does it? The reason is because those things bring pleasure, even though it’s only for a short season of time.
Self control is the ability to control one’s emotions and desires by one’s behavior, especially in difficult situations. The self control Bible definition is the same.
Our lack of control can can lead us to spiritual destruction. This is the reason why God’s word and his life changing Bible verses on self control are so important for us to learn and apply!
Building your Wall of Protection founded on the Word of God
I am currently living in Germany in a very small town in Bavaria that goes back to the middle ages. The historic homes in my 1600’s town formed a wall of protection against outsiders who wanted to attack and kill those that dwelt in Vilseck. The enemy could not penetrate the fortress of a well built city wall. The walled city was the difference between life and death for all Vilseckers during times of marauding and war.
The Bible says, He that hath no rule over his own spirit is like a city that is broken down, and without walls. Proverbs 25:28
Is there a lack of self-control over your fleshly desires? Have you let down the guard to your heart by giving into your lack of self-control and giving into sinful desires of carnality?
Truth: You are like a broken down city without walls if there is a lack of self control in your life. The enemy can, and will, succeed in attacking the very depths of your heart and soul starting in your area with lack of discipline.
Creative Sister, It’s time to barricade the walls of your heart and soul with these self control Scriptures.

- Daniel purposed in His heart not to defile himself with the king’s meat to be faithful to God.
Examples of lack of self control and discipline in the Bible
On the flip side, there are also examples of lack of self control and discipline in the Bible.
- Instead of resisting the urge to watch Bathsheba bathe on the rooftop of her home, David sent for her to fulfill his own lust and desire knowing she was married.
- As a result of his sin with Bathsheba, David sent her husband, Uriah, to war in the hottest part of the battle to die so his sin would be covered. He was a murderer.
The Foundation for Bible Verses on Self Control
The foundation of our walk with Christ is the word of God. It’s not legend and stories passed down from family members. It’s not even what we think or feel. The word of God takes precedence over our feelings and desires. The word of God is our foundation and that’s why these Bible scriptures on self control are so important. They can turn our lack of self discipline into strength.
The Key In Using These Bible verses about discipline
When William Cowper penned the following words, he was encouraging a person to trust God’s greater wisdom in the face of trouble or inexplicable events.
God moves in a mysterious way,
His wonders to perform;
He plants his footsteps in the sea,
And rides upon the storm.
It can be difficult to understand the divine connection between forsaking things that bring temporal pleasure. God’s long term vision can assure our hearts that we are to trust in Him and not in ourselves. His mysterious ways will soon prove your betterment even when you don’t understand His greater good God wants what is best for His children and has given us the key in using these Bible verses about discipline so we can grow and flourish in our faith.
I understand that it can seem counter intuitive- I am a bona fide control freak. Te challenge to us as believers in Christ is to stop thinking in the box of humanity that confines us to our earthly way of thinking. True mastery doesn’t come by you mustering up everything within you to improve your self discipline. It comes only through yielding our will and spirit to our maker so we can be growing in self control.
God’s Strength, and applying His Scriptures about self control is the only way we can overcome the desire to feed our carnal flesh. Self control isn’t about overcoming in our own strength. We need God’s divine strength.
Let’s take a look at the scripture in 2 Corinthians 12:10
Therefore I take pleasure in infirmities, in reproaches, in necessities, in persecutions, in distresses for Christ’s sake: for when I am weak, then am I strong.
The counter attack against Bible scriptures on self control
Self control is a virtue that is pushed and marketed in our society via social media, signs, billboards, leaflets, digital mediums and television. Every day we are bombarded with the idea that we are self sufficient and don’t need God to overcome.
There is a push against the Bible and the Bible scriptures on self control that we hold dear to our heart.
- Fitness centers hard sell you on the virtue of self control to get you to your weight/appearance goals.
- Nutritionists will give you many secrets of self control to eat and lose weight.
- Businessmen have fell victim to schemes of how to learn self control to finally reach their financial goals.
- Entrepreneurs have been selling entire courses on the premise of how to improve self control to create the best you.
- Our daily digital life is exploding with self control apps to helps us discipline our lives.
Self Control- Strength in Weakness
If you ever see a before and after picture of someone who has built up muscle mass, you’ll usually find a scrawny guy for the before image. The after pic usually features a buffed out man who is very capable and strong. Weakness and strength go hand in hand. We cannot have strength without weakness.
Paul was nearing the end of his life in prison and eloquently stated that the weakness that he was experiencing was making him strong in his Christian faith.
Your weakness results in reliance upon a God who can give you strength to overcome.
With a biblical definition, self control can be mastered through our God! We want to do it all in our own power but the godly attributes of self control are Spirit born. We need Him to overcome! The key in mastery is knowing that our weakness is where God can manifest His strength.
If it’s about us, we can glory in our self. But when it’s about our weakness with God’s strength helping us, God will get the glory.
Are you still protesting, and saying “I don’t have self control” Is satan telling you that you can’t do it? I’m never one to say satan is right- but in this case he is very right. You can’t muster up enough self control and discipline to overcome your weakness.
Your strength to overcome must come from God.
Self control really isn’t about your ability to control yourself. Self control is about allowing God to control your life.
How to Improve self control Biblically
There are three steps on how to improve self control biblically using these Bible Scriptures of discipline.
HEED the word
Heed the word- the Bible is our road map to heaven. The words, commands and accounts in the Bible aren’t fiction, nor are they suggestions. They are truths to live out and apply. Today’s secular culture will mock believers who believe in God’s word and it’s ability to change a life. Know what the entirety of God’s word says including these self control Bible verses.
GIVE Your selfish desires to the Lord
Give up your selfish desires to the Lord- Have you looked into your spiritual mirror and seen shortcomings? Is your lack of self control evident to you? It’s not hopeless, dear Sister. God can’t solve your problem if you don’t know that it’s there. Acknowledge your sin so you can give it to God. Don’t let the devil lie to you in this very crucial step. He will try and heap condemnation on you and make you feel like there is no way out. We are commanded to not accept that condemnation and to continue to walk in the Spirit- which brings us to the next point-
YIELD to the Holy Spirit
Yield to the Holy Spirit- Give it all to Jesus. Go to your prayer closet and just give it ALL to God.
That sin of gluttony where you emotionally eat in secret?
That seething anger that makes you throw things across the room?
The desire to want to physically harm someone?
The uncontrolled spending to try and make yourself feel better?
The lack of self discipline on social media that cuts into your responsibilities as a wife and mother?
The excessive desire for sex for the purpose of validating your self confidence?
That excessive sleeping habit that helps you escape and cope with reality?
Just Give it to Jesus. All of it.
The three important steps to spiritual self control in a nutshell
In recap, the three important steps to spiritual self control:
- Heed the Word of God
- Give your Selfish Desires to God
- Yield to the Holy Spirit
Equipping your Life with Godly Self Control
God wants to equip you with all that you need in this life to do His will. (Hebrews 13:21)
The word equip means to fill out, put in order, arrange, adjust, to fit or frame.
The main way that God fills our your life, puts in order, arranges, adjusts and fits and frames your life with all you need to overcome in this life, is by equipping you with self control and discipline from the word of God.

Need a Scripture about self control?
Let’s get into the actual verses. If you need a scripture about self control, this list of 11 Bible Scriptures will definitely help you. (All scriptures are taken from the King James Version of the Bible)
He that hath no rule over his own spirit is like a city that is broken down, and without walls.
We previously spoke about this verse in the beginning of this blog post. A lack of self discipline is compared to a city that has no protection from the enemy.
Stolen waters are sweet, and bread eaten in secret is pleasant.
There’s an excitement with the forbidden and secret desires that are sinful can bring short term pleasure.
He that is slow to anger is better than the mighty; and he that ruleth his spirit than he that taketh a city.
I love this verse that is quite literal with it’s two points. If you are slow to anger you are better than the mighty person and if you rule your spirit you are better than he has has conquered a city.
Hast thou found honey? eat so much as is sufficient for thee, lest thou be filled therewith, and vomit it.
Sweets are a wonderful treat, but too much of a good thing will cause you sickness. This is also true in the spiritual sense. This verse is referring to food but can also be applied to our spiritual walk.
And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God.
Self discipline takes a constant renewing and transforming of our mind.
1 Corinthians 9:25
And every man that striveth for the mastery is temperate in all things. Now they do it to obtain a corruptible crown; but we an incorruptible.
An athlete will train for hours to perfect his sport. In the same manner must we continually pray, read and master our bodies so we can obtain a crown of life.
1 Corinthians 10:13
There hath no temptation taken you but such as is common to man: but God is faithful, who will not suffer you to be tempted above that ye are able; but will with the temptation also make a way to escape, that ye may be able to bear it.
No matter the temptation that comes your way,l God has promised a way of escape or a way to bear your tempation. Whichever happens, we can be assured that God trusts us enough to go through our trials.
But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, Meekness, temperance: against such there is no law. And they that are Christ’s have crucified the flesh with the affections and lusts.
The hallmarks of the life of a Christian include the fruit of the Spirit. The last attribute mentioned in Galatians is temperance, which is the virtue of mastering passions and desires.
But a lover of hospitality, a lover of good men, sober, just, holy, temperate;
Paul, speaking to Titus, laid out the qualities of a bishop stating that they must be temperate. The word temperate means to master, control and restrain yourself.
2 Timothy 1:7
For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind.
Imagine my surprise when I looked up the word mind in the group and found it to mean self control and moderation. I had always thought it was the literal mind.
1 Corinthians 9:25-27
And every man that striveth for the mastery is temperate in all things. Now they do it to obtain a corruptible crown; but we an incorruptible. I therefore so run, not as uncertainly; so fight I, not as one that beateth the air: But I keep under my body, and bring it into subjection: lest that by any means, when I have preached to others, I myself should be a castaway.
Paul, once again, compared the faith walk to that of a race where temperance is necessary to run and win a race. Paul mentions about keeping the body under subjection and even alludes to the fact that it might sometimes take a beating down of the flesh with bruises to gain self control. Such an eye opening Scripture.
