15 Exciting Methods of Note Taking Methods For Your Personal Bible Study

Here are the 15 types of that you can use for your personal Bible study.

Verse Mapping

Verse mapping is a Bible note taking system where you do a word study on a specific verse using a dictionary and/or the original Greek or Hebrew original language. I use the Blue letter Bible or Bible Hub to do that and both are amazing. Verse Mapping is helpful because it helps the note taker to get a deeper understanding of the original context of a Bible verse and gives a broader understanding of the passage of Scripture.

Lists

Making lists is a simple notetaking technique that is a simple form of organizing information clearly and concisely.

The benefits of list making are:

• Organization- Clear and concise presentation of information
• Memorization- Lists are helpful for memorization
• Easy- List making is the most simple way to take notes

Sticky Notes

I love using sticky notes in my Bible for note taking. They come in all shapes and sizes and can be used for temporary or permanent notes. If there’s a note that I’m not sure about biblically, I will use one in the margin of my Bible in case I need to come back and clarify a note permanently. Sometimes I prefer it for permanent notes as well.

They come in gridded lines, cute themes and plain neon. I have them all.

You can make your own Bible book tabs with sticky notes write your devotional thoughts and personal reflections. You can also use them for writing additional exploration of the text you are studying from Scripture.

Sticky notes are helpful for:

1. Highlighting important information: Sticky notes can be used to mark specific verses or passages, making them easy to find and review later.
2. Creating visual aids: Sticky notes create visual aids for quick remembrance
3. Personalization: Sticky notes to add your personalization to your personal notes, thoughts and reflections and are perfect for sticking prayers in your Bible.
4. Portability: The beauty of sticky notes is that they are portable, small and can be easily moved to a different place in your Bible if needed. They are small in size and easy to carry around. I carry gridded post its in the pages of where I am reading for quick and easy access.
5. Sticky notes are helpful because they allow for organization of ideas and highlighting of key information.

Sticky Notes are a low tech and simple way to organize and emphasize important information.

Sentence Note Taking

Sentence note taking is when you take the Bible text and write it in your own words.

it can be beneficial in note taking because it helps you to better understand and remember the information what you have read because you are paraphrasing it in your own words.

It’s simply great reinforcement. it also helps you to identify gaps in your understanding of God’s word and can inspire you to ask further questions.

Doodling

Bible doodling is a technique similar to Bible Journaling but on a small scale.

Drawings and illustrations can help you as a reader engage with the scripture and remember important verses or passages. Bible doodling can help bring the text to life and make it more memorable.

It also provides a way to express o thoughts, prayers, and feelings creatively.

Key Words

Finding keywords in the biblical text is a form of study that involves locating words or phrases that have been repeated and emphasize a specific theme. I use keyword study in my daily Bible reading. When I find pertinent keywords, I do a Hebrew or Greek word study to find out the original intent of the word.

In my Bible pictured at right you can see keywords emphasized with the word study next to it. Searching for keywords can be challenging but it definitely is rewarding.

Finding keywords help you to find key themes and concepts in God’s word. It also helps you understand the meaning of a verse by finding the entire context of surrounding verses.

Journaling

Journaling in your Bible is a creative technique where you write down your thoughts and reflections regarding the passages you are reading from your study abd quiet time. Journaling can include your observations, insights, doodles, questions, personal applications, and prayers. Journaling helps you to record your spiritual journey with God.

Summarizing

Summarizing is when you condensing information from a larger text or passage into a shorter, more condensed version. Summarizing contains the major ideas and significant points.

Summarizing is important because it makes large amounts of information manageable. It’s a great idea to summarize each chapter of your Bible and also each book and write it down on the pages of your Bible or on a sticky note. Many Bibles already have the book and sometimes chapters prewritten but it’s good to study and summarize yourself for a greater understanding.

Highlighting and Underlining

Two amazing techniques that are used to identify and emphasize important portions of the Bible are highlighting and underlining. You can also highlight your own thoughts and personal notes.

To draw attention to a particular area of text, you can highlight it by coloring it with a highlighter or pen, usually in a vibrant fluorescent color like yellow or pink. Highlighting is used to highlight major ideas or phrases in a Bible passage that are especially significant. highlighting and underlining can be of the original Bible and from when you record insights of your notes.

Underlining is a technique where a line is drawn under a segment of text to emphasize that it is significant or notable.

Underlining and highlighting are frequently used together showing most important information.

Highlighting and underlining help you to quickly identify key information.

Asking Questions

Before you laugh, hear me out.

Asking questions is a note taking technique for studying the word of God where you write down all of the questions you find while reading and studying the Bible. Asking questions encourages critical thinking and deeper understanding of the Bible.

And you thought asking questions was silly! Nope! Just write down all of your questions and come back to answer your questions after doing your research.

It’s okay to not have the answer to everything. You might find the answer in another week, month or year. Or never. The important thing is that you have a heart to learn more about God, Jesus, the Holy Spirit, and His word.

Here are a few tips for using the technique of asking questions for your Bible study. Here are some tips to use the method of asking questions in your note taking :

1. As you read your Bible, ask any questions that come to mind no matter how insignificant or small they may seem.
2. Look for any areas where your comprehension of the material is lacking or where certain details are unclear. Try and fill in the gaps.
3. Try looking for connections between different Bible verses
4. Ask questions about the historical or cultural context of the text, and about the author’s purpose or intended audience. Study the historical and culture context of the book you are reading and find the intended audience and author’s purpose. Context is important.
5. Find related passages and let the Bible speak for itself. If you still have questions, use a trusted commentary.

Asking questions is a great way to engage with the text and to deepen your understanding of God’s word. It can also help to make the text more relevant and meaningful to your own life.

Asking questions also increase your comprehension of God’s word. Don’t be afraid to write your questions in the margins of your Bible. Leave space near your question if possible so you can come back and write the answer. Or you can write your Q and A’s on a post it in your Bible margins.

Mind Mapping

Mind mapping is a visual note-taking technique that involves diagramming ideas and concepts connected around a centered hub. Sub thoughts extend outward with related ideas, subtopics, or details that are branches. In my example at right, you can see how I mind mapped the book of Ephesians using an app called Miro.

Mind mapping is useful for understanding complex information and for brainstorming new ideas.

Mind mapping can be done digitally on your electronic device, (as in the above example picture) or you can take your handwritten notes, break them down and diagram them

Chapter Titles

Chapter titles are found from summarizing the contents of every chapter in the book of the Bible you are studying.

Some Bibles incled pre written. chapter summaries. These titles are not part of the original biblical text, but rather were added later as a way to help readers understand the content of each chapter and how it relates to the overall book.

Chapter titles can be helpful in Bible study because they provide a brief overview of the content of the chapter, and can help you to identify key themes within a book. They can also serve as a starting point for further study and reflection on the Bible book as a whole.

It’s worth noting that different translations of the Bible may have different chapter titles, some translations may not have any chapter titles at all. Some study Bibles have additional headings and subheadings within chapters, they are also not original text but added to help readers to understand the context and flow of the passage. It is important to be aware of the source of the chapter titles and headings when studying the Bible, as they can provide helpful context but should not be taken as part of the original text.

Outlining

Outlining is one of the most well known Bible study note taking methods. It is where you organize your notes into a format including a heading, subheadings and bullet points.

Outlining is helpful because it gives you a birds eye view of your study topic where you can see the main ideas, it’s themes and important key points.

Cornell notes

I must be living under a rock, but I had never heard of the Cornell note taking method until doing research for this blog post. My Bible college days consisted of haphazard note taking and the Cornell method is on the top of the list of things I want to implement.

Cornell notes is a note-taking method developed by Dr. Walter Pauk, who is a professor at Cornell university.

It would be perfect for sermon outline note taking and Topical Bible Study.

The Cornell method involves dividing your paper into three sections: a large note-taking area on the right side, a summary area on the left side, column on the right side as you see in the picture below.
