As she puts it: “A few years ago, I found myself exhausted and isolated, my soul and body sick. I was tired of being tired, burned out on busy. And, it seemed almost everyone I talked with was in the same boat: longing for connection, meaning, depth, but settling for busy.
“I am a wife, mother, daughter, sister, friend, neighbor, writer, and I know all too well that settling feeling. But over the course of the last few years, I’ve learned a way to live, marked by grace, love, rest, and play. And it’s changing everything.
“Present Over Perfect is an invitation to this journey that changed my life. I’ll walk this path with you, a path away from frantic pushing and proving, and toward your essential self, the one you were created to be before you began proving and earning for your worth.”
Written in Shauna’s warm and vulnerable style, this collection of essays focuses on the most important transformation in her life, and maybe yours too: leaving behind busyness and frantic living and rediscovering the person you were made to be. Present Over Perfect is a hand reaching out, pulling you free from the constant pressure to perform faster, push harder, and produce more, all while maintaining an exhausting image of perfection.
Shauna offers an honest account of what led her to begin this journey, and a compelling vision for an entirely new way to live: soaked in grace, rest, silence, simplicity, prayer, and connection with the people that matter most to us.
Girl Meets Change: Truths to Carry You through Life’s Transitions by Kristen Strong
Whether chosen and celebrated–like going off to college or welcoming your first baby–or unexpected and anxiety-inducing–like losing a job or grappling with a broken trust–all change brings stress. Kristen Strong knows about change–especially the kind you didn’t choose or expect. What she’s fought hard to learn over the years is that change is not something to be feared but something to be received as a blessing from a God who, more often than not, works through change, not in spite of it. Strong has learned to see change not as a grievance but as a grace.
In this hope-filled book, she shows women how when we follow God’s will, we receive blessings of contentment, purpose, and renewed strength. She encourages women to see change not as the end of their story but as the scenery for this part of life’s journey. And she offers practical advice for coping with change in every part of life. Anyone who has struggled to adjust to life’s transitions will welcome this warm and personal perspective.
For many of us, we might busy ourselves with projects or work long hours to keep our mind off our pain. We might look at our circumstances and seek to change our situation in the hope that we will finally feel at peace once our life has changed.
The question is – How often do you look to God in His Word for help and hope? How often do you turn to Him when you feel anxious, distraught, or abandoned? How often do you bring your burdens to your Savior? Take a journey of hope through the Psalms of lament with Christina Fox.

Disappointment with God: Three Questions No One Asks by Philip Yancey
Bestselling author Philip Yancey tackles questions Christians often wonder but seldom ask aloud. In his illuminating exploration, he uncovers true, real, and lasting hope in the midst of your darkness that will produce an even stronger faith than you had before.
Do you feel like you’ve been let down by God? Abandoned by the One who was supposed to come to your rescue when you needed it most?
You’ve come to the right place. Philip Yancey has a gift for articulating and answering some of the most honest, complex issues of faith. In this 25th Anniversary edition of Disappointment with God, Yancey poses three questions that Christians wonder but rarely feel permission to voice:
- If God is so hungry for relationship with us, why does he seem so distant?
- If God cares for us, why do bad things happen?
- If God’s promises are true, why do they feel so far off from personal experience?
With clarity, honesty, and biblical assurance, this insightful and deeply personal book shows you the light in the midst of darkness–the hope that God offers right in the middle of life’s disappointments. Yancey points you beyond the cynicism that is often bred in hardship to a stronger, wiser faith, a confidence in God’s deep love, and a thirst to reach not just for what God gives, but for who God is.
Included in this anniversary edition is a study guide with questions about these perplexing crises of faith that the author confronts.
Where is God when it Hurts? by Philip Yancey
An inspirational classic for more than thirty years, Where Is God When It Hurts? honestly explores pain–whether physical, emotional, or spiritual–and sheds new light on God’s presence in our suffering. Includes a discussion guide.
“How can a loving God allow this to happen? Either God is all-loving or all-powerful, but he can’t be both.”
You’ve heard that question, and perhaps even asked it yourself. No matter how you complete it, at its root lies the issue of pain. When a loved one dies, we receive a terminal diagnosis, or natural disasters strike, people often wonder whether God is the cause of suffering and why he doesn’t immediately take away the pain or fix the situation. As a result, we become angry at the once-beloved God who betrayed us.
In this Gold Medallion Award-winning book, Philip Yancey uses examples from the Bible and from his own experiences to show us how we can learn to accept–without blame, anger, or fear–that which we don’t understand. He answers questions such as:
- Why is there such a thing as pain?
- Is pain a message from God?
- How should we respond to suffering?
- How can we cope with pain?
- Does faith help?
Yancey speaks to everyone for whom life sometimes doesn’t make sense. With compassion and clarity, Yancey brings us one step closer to finding an answer when our pain, or the pain of those we love, is real and we are left wondering, where is God when it hurts?
Defiant Joy: Taking Hold of Hope, Beauty, and Life in a Hurting World by Stasi Eldridge
Defiant Joy will help you…
- get off the emotional roller coaster and experience daily joy;
- learn how to have a posture of holy defiance when circumstances threaten to weigh down your soul; and
- find new perspectives on painful circumstances and see how God sometimes interferes with your life to heal and transform you.
We are called to live. And, miraculously, to live with joy.
We all spend a lot of energy reaching for happiness, but we are never quite able to hang on to it. Real life happens, and our circumstances take us on an emotional rollercoaster ride. So the Bible’s call to “be joyful always” sounds almost crazy—and out of reach. But it doesn’t have to be.
Joy is meant to be ours, a joy that is defiant in the face of this broken world. This joy is not simply happiness on steroids; it’s the unyielding belief that sorrow and loss do not have the final say. It’s the stubborn determination to be present to whatever may come and to interpret both goodness and grief by the light of heaven.
In Defiant Joy, Stasi Eldredge invites us with courage, candor, and tender vulnerability to a place beyond sadness or happiness. She shows us how to maintain a posture of holy defiance that neither denies nor diminishes our pain but dares to live with expectant, unwavering hope.
As a society, we are in the throes of a collective panic attack. Anxiety and loneliness are on the rise, with 77% of our population experiencing physical symptoms of stress on a regular basis. We feel pressure chasing careers, security, and keeping up. We worry about health, politics, and many other complexities we can’t control. Eventually we find our minds spinning, trying to cope or manage a low hum of anxiety, unlike ever before.
But it doesn’t have to stay this way.
Rebekah draws from her own battle with depression and anxiety and shares a pathway to establish four life-giving rhythms that quiet inner chaos and make room for a flourishing life. By taking time to rest, restore, connect, and create, you will discover how to:
- Take charge of your emotional health and inspire your loved ones to do the same
- Overcome anxiety by establishing daily habits that keep you mentally and physically strong
- Find joy through restored relationships in your family and community
- Walk in confidence with the unique gifts you have to offer the world

The Masquerade of the Ball by Cindy Hebert
Do you suffer in silence battling anxiety, depression, or possibly both? Do you feel ashamed because you struggle with such things? Cindy Hebert did too! The Masquerade of the Ball is her personal testimony of being debilitated by it all for thirteen years. She was heavily medicated during that time but now experiences freedom from it all. She hid her struggles from everyone and especially those within the Christian community and church setting. This book will give hope to the hurting and shed light on the darkness that many struggle with on a daily basis. She hopes to help unmask those hiding behind the smile while biblically encouraging about the love and grace God has for those suffering in silence.
The Anxious Christian: Can God Use Your Anxiety for Good? by Rhett Smith
Is anxiety “un-Christian”?
Many Christians believe the answer to this question is yes! Understandably, then, many Christians feel shame when they are anxious. They especially feel this shame when well-intentioned fellow believers dismiss or devalue anxiety with Christian platitudes and Bible verses.
Rhett Smith, Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist, helps us understand anxiety in a new way. Rhett argues that, rather than being destructive or shameful, anxiety can be a catalyst for our spiritual growth. Using Biblical thinking and personal examples, Rhett explains how anxiety allows us to face our resistance and fears, understand where those fears come from, and then make intentional decisions about issues such as career, marriage, money, and our spiritual lives.
Allow this book to challenge your view of anxiety, and allow God to use your anxiety for good.
Gospel Hope for Anxious Hearts: Trading Fear and Worry for the Peace of God by Charles Spurgeon
“The man who is full of care, is ripe for any sin, but he who has cast his care on God stands securely, neither shall the evil one be able to touch him!”
Is true peace possible in our anxious world?
From his time until the present day, Charles Spurgeon’s sermons have captured the hearts and imaginations of listeners and readers alike. Drawing from this rich tradition, Gospel Hope for Anxious Hearts leads readers from fear and worry to the peace of God that passes all understanding in Christ Jesus. Readers will be challenged and empowered for overcoming anxiety through the healing balm of the gospel.

Running Scared: Fear, Worry, and the God of Rest by Edward T. Welch
Edward T. Welch investigates the roots of fear in the human soul and the ramifications of living in the grips of anxiety, worry, and dread. Welch encourages readers to discover for themselves that the Bible is full of beautiful words of comfort for fearful people (and that every single person is afraid of something). Within the framework of thirty topical meditations, Welch offers sound biblical theology and moment-by-moment, thoughtful encouragement for life-saving rescue in the midst of the heart and mind battlefield of rampant panic-stricken responses.
This comprehensive primer on the topic of fear, worry, and the rest of God will have Christians looking to scripture for invariable constancy, stalwart care, and robust comfort, instead of as Welch terms it hitting the default switch by responding with characteristic human independence, control, and self-protectiveness. Running Scared affirms that, through biblical Scripture, God speaks directly to our fears: On money and possessions On people and their judgments On death, pain, and punishment. Welch’s lively text provides convincing evidences that humanity’s struggle against active and dormant fears are countless.
The good news is that God provides both the remedy and the cure for this malady in the person of Jesus Christ, the work of the Holy Spirit, and through powerful, life-altering promises in Christian Scripture. Far more than merely another psychology self-help guide, Running Scared serves as a biblical roadmap to a life of serenity and security.
