How to Guard Your Heart Against Anxiety

Preview:  Biblical Bible verses on how to help with anxiety for the Christian Women.

It took great courage for me to share and write this blog post  Up until now, 7 years after the day when my husband collapsed and was diagnosed with three brain aneurysms, {one of which hemmoraghed) I haven’t fully shared my story.  I cannot thank those enough who prayed for us,  who sent us offerings and  were there for us during the most difficult time in our life.  If this story and Scriptures resonate with you, could you please share this blog post so others can read?  I would be so grateful!

How to Guard Your Heart Against Anxiety- Bible Verses on How to Help with Anxiety

A Biblical How to- Help with  Anxiety for the Christian

I thought he was kidding.

I was about to razz my husband and make a snarky joke about him not being able to hang with the “big boys” as he shot some baskets at an arcade game.

He looked tired.

As he moved back about 10 steps to sit down on a ledge next to me, that’s when I noticed his eyes.

He was looking at me but there was no connection.  It was the expression- something was missing.  He sat down next to me and the next thing I knew he went unconscious and collapsed into my chest.

That’s when the frenzy began.

“He’s having a stroke”.
“It’s a heart attack”.
“Somebody get help”

I ran to the nearby fire department as I left my dear husband with my beloved friends.

I ran quickly at first, but my pace decreased as I got tired.  I was out of shape and my breathing was labored. I was angry at myself because my body wasn’t going as fast as I wanted it to.

This was when the first fiery dart of anxiety from satan himself  was aimed at my heart and hit target.

“Your delay in getting an ambulance will cause your husband to die.”

After telling the fire station staff where to go, I ran back down the street.  My husband was laying lifeless on the sidewalk with our friends surrounding him. I’ll never know how they combat carried him through the parking lot to the street for easy access to the ambulance, but I’m grateful they did.

Those beautiful people are forever my heroes.

On the sidewalk, they were doing first aid on him and passers by walked by without a second glance.

I threw myself on the sidewalk next to my beloved husband of 22 years and pulled his long arms towards me to scoop up his head in my lap.

And then I prayed. Loud.

I needed divine intervention.

Bible Verses on How to Help with Anxiety

Bible Verses on How to Help with Anxiety

When Paul was writing to the church at Philippi, they were going through some serious tribulation.  Back in that time they didn’t have a handy dandy concordance of new testament Bible verses of anxiety for the New Testament saint.  But we do.

In the middle of the battle, Paul’s desire for them was to walk in joy- even in the midst of hardship and trouble.

Is it even possible?  Can a person really live a life of fear over faith and cast aside anxiety?

The Fear followed me Across Continents

Time went on and we moved from Korea to Chicagoland.

Hubby fully recovered with only one side effect- he has a constant ringing in his ears that sounds like white noise.

The days seemed torturous for me as I went through self diagnosed PTSD.
When you’ve watched the most beloved person in your world nearly die before your eyes, it does something to you.

Enter another fiery dart of the devil.
“You will bury your husband in Chicago Heights.”

And Creative Sister,  let me tell you- the grip employed by satan hit me in the midst of my heart and reverberated in my soul  for 5 years.

Five LONG years.

I had God’s promises. I knew His working.

I knew the miracle that God had done when he survived three brain aneurysms, one of which hemmoraghed, with no memory loss or brain damage.

But satan kept sewing his seeds of anxiety.

Every single day I cried for (seemingly) no reason.
I cried while getting ready in the morning.
I cried while at the stove cooking.
I cried in the car.

Who am I kidding?  I cried everywhere.

The fiery pit of hell sent my heart a message on a daily basis- that I was going to bury my husband in Chicagoland.  Every time we passed a funeral home (and there are PLENTY) I’d be reminded.

Bible Verses on How to Help with AnxietyResignation- How to overcome- of Anxiety, fear and Worry

Have you ever prayed and asked God how to get over a fear?
Have you ever wondered how to get help with anxiety according to the Bible?
Can the Bible really show you how to overcome of anxiety, stress and worry?

There are many true stories about fear in Bible and verses of anxiety that we can apply to our lives.

The word anxiety might not be mentioned in the Bible but there are plenty of instances where anxiety in Bible terms can be seen.

Lord, Your Will be Done

One of my most memorable prayers during my husband’s 2 week hospitalization was a breaking of my will- where I finally gave it all to the Lord.

“If you want to take Dave home, Lord,  your will be done.”

I was literally powerless over life.  I resigned my will and put everything at the feet of my Master.
And that’s when I was flooded with God’s peace.  I knew that whatever happened, in the life or death of my husband, the Lord would take care of me.

It was during this time that two songs became my anthems in life,  Matt Redman’s 10.000 Reasons and Vince Gill’s Threaten me with Heaven.   (You can scroll down to the end of this blog post to listen to those great songs)

These songs were mainstays that reminded me that no matter what I go through,  I have so many things to be thankful for.  The end goal for the saints of God is an eternity with Him.

Spiritual Warfare Using God’s Word

Satan's Lies are Strong but God is Stronger Do you think that you can battle satan in your own strength?
I can’t say this enough.

You can’t.

You need the divine power of God and His word to back you up and give you authority.

satan’s lies are strong but the truth of God is stronger.

The truth of God’s word stands strong and is meant for us to use against the spiritual warfare that the devil throws at us.  The word of God is our spiritual armor.

Does fear ever take hold?  You bet it does.
Do the same fears crop up again?  They do.

But the key to guarding the heart against anxiety lays in applying God’s timeless truth by way of Scripture.

It wasn’t until the end of 5 years that we finally stepped on a plane to relocate to Germany that I sat down and verbally told satan where he could go-and where he could put his wicked lies- back to the pit of hell for all eternity.  All of the filth and lies he had told me were not true.

And then I praised God.

Verses of Anxiety in Bible Scriptures

How to Get Over a Fear as a Christian with Bible Scriptures on Overcoming AnxietyThe epistle of Paul to the Philippians focuses on joy and the word joy is mentioned multiple times in the book.

Paul’s desire was for the Philippian church to walk in joy to further their joyful faith.  (Philippians chapter 2 is full of admonition and encouragement for the Philippian saints to be full of joy.

What is JOY?  The Greek word for joy is chara χαρά, khar-ah’; from G5463; which means cheerfulness, calm delight and gladness.

It was satan’s desire to squash out that joy by sewing seeds of worry into the hearts of the Philippian believers.  God has given us His word to combat worry and anxiety.

So lovely sister,  It’s with my life experience that I offer you these Bible verses on how to Help with anxiety are a balm to your soul in times of trial.

Let’s dig in, shall we?

Be Anxious In Nothing Verse

Be Anxious in Nothing VerseDon’t be anxious- Pray

Paul told the believers at Philippi to be careful in nothing.

Be careful for nothing; but in every thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God. -Philippians 4:6

How and why would Paul be telling them to be careful?  It doesn’t make sense, does it?  It does when we do a bit of Greek word study.

The word for careful in the Greek is merimnaō (me-rēm-nä’-ō) which means to be anxious and  troubled with cares.

Paul was telling them to not be full of anxiety over anything.
And then he gives the first solution to that anxiety.

But in every thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God. -Philippians 4:6

Are you anxious Creative Sister?
Are you drowning in the cares of this world?

Take it to HIM in prayer this very moment.
He is waiting for you to go to Him in prayer!

Scripture About the Peace of God

The Peace of God Scripture to Fight Anxiety

Allow the peace of God to keep your heart and mind through Christ Jesus

And the peace of God, which passes all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus. –  Philippian 4:7

When everything is out of control, pray and ask the Lord to help you with His Scripture about the peace of God.

Peace- a state of national tranquility, exempted to the rage and havoc of war, security, safety, harmony and concord

Heart- kardia- the center of all physical and spiritual life

Mind- mental perception

Think on These Things Scripture

Think on These Things Scripture

This is where our mind and thought process is brought into the subjection of Christ as we reign in our thoughts and focus on what is good.  This think on these things Scripture is beneficial for your spiritual warfare battle

Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things.  -Philippians 4:8

Do you allow the father of lies to run havoc in your mind?
Do you entertain those lies in your heart and mind?

Creative Sister,  God is commanding us to think on things that are:
true, honest, just, pure, lovely, of a good report, things that are virtuous and things that are worthy of praise.

Surely, in my case, focusing on the seed of satan only caused turmoil and sewed seeds of doubt and unbelief.

If you have a bit of time, look up the words in Philippians 4:8 in your Greek Lexicon or over at the Blue Letter Bible.
It is really eye opening.

  1. True- not focusing on lies
  2. Just- upright, righteous, virtuous, innocent, faultless, guiltless
  3. Pure- reverent, venerable, sacred, pure from carnality, chaste, clean
  4. Lovely- acceptable and pleasing
  5. Good report- things that sound well
  6. Virtue- moral goodness and excellence
  7. Praise- commendation or praise

In thinking and focusing on good things,  we won’t have time to think about :

  • The lies of satan
  • Negativity that hinders our growth in God

Stay Focused on God Scripture

Stay Focused on God Scripture

Thou wilt keep him in perfect peace, whose mind is stayed on thee: because he trusteth in thee.  Isaiah 26:3

Perfect peace is completeness.  It is soundness.

When you fasten your heart upon God’s truth, you are resting in, laying in, being supported, being held and sustained by the lover of your soul.

Is perfect peace the desire of your heart?

This stay focused on God Scripture  will eliminate the noise and anxiety and allow you to have the perfect peace of God.

Spiritual Warfare Scriptures

Spiritual Warfare Scripture

The next few Bible verses are Spiritual Warfare Scriptures.

Our war is not against flesh and blood, but is a spiritual warfare waged in the heavenlies.  You might think that a person is attacking you but it is so much more than that.  It’s spiritual warfare when a person is motivated by satan to attack you.

Use Spiritual Weapons to Cast Down Thoughts of Worry and Anxiousness

For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal, but mighty through God to the pulling down of strong holds; Casting down imaginations, and every high thing that exalteth itself against the knowledge of God, and bringing into captivity every thought to the obedience of Christ;  2 Corinthians 10:3-6

The weapons of our warfare are mighty through God– The word mighty in the Greek is dunatos which means to be able, powerful, mighty and strong.

What is our part in this spiritual warfare?  We must CAST DOWN the fiery darts of the devil.

For me, it was those lies that I was going to bury my husband and that he would die while we were still living in Chicago Heights.

Those imaginations are fleshly reasonings, judgements and decisions that exalt themselves against God’s truth and promises.

When we cast those thoughts down we are bringing them into obedience.

Our Mission in Fighting Anxiety as Found in the Scripture

Finally, my brethren, be strong in the Lord, and in the power of his might. Put on the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil. For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places.Wherefore take unto you the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand. Stand therefore, having your loins girt about with truth, and having on the breastplate of righteousness;  And your feet shod with the preparation of the gospel of peace; Above all, taking the shield of faith, wherewith ye shall be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked. And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God: Praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit, and watching thereunto with all perseverance and supplication for all saints; -Ephesians 6:10-18

Your mission, if you wish to accept it,  (and I hope you do) is to:

  • Be strong in the Lord (not in yourself)
  • Be strong in the power of His might
  • Put on the entire armor of God.  Your job is a full time soldier.  Wear your armor.
  • Stand in God’s confidence against the wiles of the devil.  The confidence comes from God and not you.
  • Realize you are not warring against flesh and blood but against spiritual wickedness in high places.  Your attack might come from a person, but realize that the motivation is of satan.
  • Girt your loins with God’s truth- quote God’s word to yourself daily.
  • Stand in battle.
  • Wear God’s breastplate of righteousness for protection against the fiery darts of satan
  • Part of your spiritual armor are your spiritual shoes which are the gospel of peace.
Share the gospel even during difficult times because others need to hear your testimony as you go through the fire.
  • Quench all the fiery darts of the wicked one with the shield of faith.
  • Guard your mind with the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God

With God’s spiritual armor you can quench all of the fiery darts of the wicked one.

Scriptures of Confidence

As a child of God, we can have confidence in our God and what he has done for us.  It’s important to mention that we cannot muster up this confidence in our own strength because our righteousness is as filthy rags.

Christ has made us righteous and that should give us Godly confidence.
God doesn’t want you to walk in doubt always questioning who you belong to.

When someone asks you who your earthly father is,  you respond with His name.  The same is true with your Heavenly Father.

Who is your Daddy?  GOD is!

Read, learn and study these Scriptures of confidence until you are able to apply God’s divine confidence in your life.

Take heed, brethren, lest there be in any of you an evil heart of unbelief, in departing from the living God.  -Hebrews 3:12

Having therefore, brethren, boldness to enter into the holiest by the blood of Jesus,  -Hebrews 10:19

Surround Yourself with Products that Proclaim God's Peace

As a result of applying these Scriptures of confidence you will be able to fully dwell in victorious confidence over your anxiety.

Ultimately, worry can grow a heart of distrust and unbelief in God.

He Cares for You Scripture

The world can be fickle.  Relationships fade and feelings ebb and flow.
But God’s love is everlasting and does not change.  That steadfast love of the Lord towards us can reassure our hearts on a daily basis and help us to overcome anxiety in life.

Casting all your care upon him; for he careth for you. -1 Peter 5:7

I love the visuals of this verse after doing a word study in the Greek.

The word casting means to place upon or throw upon.  My burdens are wearisome.  They are heavy.  I try to carry them for as long as possible but God is telling me to throw them to him.  I’m heaving them HIS way because He can handle them so much better than myself.

How to- Help with Anxiety

The Greek word for care is anxiety.  ANXIETY!

Biblical How to- Help with Anxiety

My precious Sister,  Are you ready to cast all of your CARES and ANXIETY upon the Lord today?
The world will dissappoint.  But God has given us His word for a Biblical how to.  Help with Anxiety is just a prayer away.

Knowing what the Lord has promised us in Scripture will pave the way for us to claim victory in the name of Jesus.

The Bible is full of real life stories of those who have overcome their fear and anxiety by reading scripture and trusting God for the outcome.

Does anxiety and fear ever creep in again?  I’d be a liar if I said it didn’t.

The upkeep of our souls is still part of the spiritual warfare that continues to take place and I have to constantly renew my mind in the Scripture as long as satan buffets me.

The Great Change

The day my husband collapsed into my arms was a pivotal moment in my life and in my walk with God.

There has been a great metamorphis that would have never taken place had I not experienced such a great time of anxiety and sorrow.

  • I have learned to not take every day for granted.
  • I am more thankful for even the smallest things.
  • I appreciate my husband whereas before I would take him for granted.
  • My husband’s and I relationship has grown in ways that would have never happened pre brain anuerysms.
  • The trials have drawn me closer to the Lord in ways I could never have imagined.
  • My faith walk with God is deeper than ever.

I can see clearly that God REALLY DOES work all things together for His good- even our anxiety and the most difficult hardships.

Bitter or Better- We do have a choice

Creative Sister,  Satan wants to destroy your soul and he does that by way of anxiety and trials.  Don’t allow the anxiety of life to make you become bitter with God.  Allow it to help you rely on Him, pray to him and draw you closer to Him.

It is my hope and prayer that these Bible verses on How to Help with Anxiety will resonate in your heart and mind and that you will be victorious in the Lord!
