We didn’t even know what the word protection meant, and yet, we experienced it firsthand in:

- being swooshed back and forth to the singing of Mom’s voice and finally being lulled to sleep.
I’ll admit to you, sweet Sis, that as a women of 56 years of age, I longed for the touch of my dear Mother, whose touch could ease the suffering of physical pain as a young girl. I wish that her soothing touch could be felt again, as I had a rod placed in my femur and the pain of chemo and cancer. As a little girl with a tummy ache, she would place her hand on my stomach and gently rub in a circular motion to ease my little girl stomach ache.
Her touch was perfect and alway brought relief.
Nothing compared to my Mother’s touch. The memory of her comforting touch is so poignant and brings tears to my eyes as I write this.

Psalm 91 is so often committed to memory and people recite it during times of trouble or danger. And it’s not surprising really. This prayer of safeguarding beautifully showcases the trust and confidence of God’s protection and care to His children.

The Psalm 91 key verse can be summarized in verse 1 which reads:
He that dwelleth in the secret place of the most High shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty.
The language of the first verse is so picturesque of how we are protected by the Lord. He puts us in a secret place and we are overshadowed by His presence. It reminds me of the Israelites who were led in the wilderness by God by a pillar of cloud by day and the pillar of fire by night.
In both instances we see the protection of God for His people.

Psalm 91 is a book of poetry- it is a poetical book written as a song, and is most likely written by King David. This book isn’t a book of steadfast promises or commandments, nor is it an epistle. It’s a book of poetry.
We have to keep that in mind when reading.
Surely God covers us in His wings, but that doesn’t mean that we won’t ever go through hardship. How I wish that weren’t so.
We dwell under the shadow of the Almighty but that doesn’t mean we will not experience hard times or attacks of the devil
He will deliver us from the snare of the fowler but that doesn’t mean we will have never experienced being ensnared.
He will deliver us from the noisome pestilence, but that doesn’t mean we will never experience the noisome pestilence.
He will deliver us from the terror by night, but that doesn’t mean we will never experience the terror by night.
He will deliver us from the arrows that fly, but that doesn’t mean that we won’t experience the arrows that come our way. In the book of Ephesians, we are told of fiery darts that will come our way as a result of spiritual warfare and how to quench them.
Do you catch my drift, Sis? I hate to say it- but it’s got to be said. We aren’t exempt from hardship.
Psalm 91 isn’t a chapter of name it and claim it litany of promises where you can magically be exempt from hardships. But we can be assured that God gives us a place of safety, reprieve and protection.
Does that mean we should not pray Psalm 91?
Absolutely not. We should continue to pray because the effectual prayer of a righteous man availeth much.
We can continue to pray God’s protection over our lives using Psalm 91, and other Scripture as our guide.

“He who dwells in the shelter of the Most High will rest in the shadow of the Almighty.” (verse 1) – This verse sets the tone and theme for the whole psalm and emphasizes the importance that we have a shelter with God should things get difficult.

When I was in the field in the Army, the Christians in my unit would gather in the shade of the deuce and a half (truck) to pray, fellowship, study and have church together. Psalm 91, is the perfect prayer for a soldier or a loved one asking for God’s protection and strength to guide them through their mission safely.
Do you know anyone who is having surgery or in the hospital? Maybe you could visit and read Psalm 91 with them? Or maybe you can volunteer and read with them. (How awesome would that be!) The Psalm would surely bring comfort to those with listening ears!

It’s so important to keep our eyes on God. Many talk about reciting a prayer to get things or aren’t asking in accordance to God’s will, but for their own pleasure.
