Here’s Why a Prayer List is Important
Prayer lists are such an important spiritual tool for us as Christians and we can easily underestimate how valuable it is to intentionally write down the things we want to pray for.
A prayer list helps us keeping our prayer life creative and is a great way to deepen and enrich our personal walk with God. It’s most basic benefit is that it helps you keep track of prayer requests.
Here are 10 creative Prayer List Ideas to Enrich Your Quiet Time with God:

My Top 10 Prayer List Ideas
Idea #1- Go Old School with Paper, a Journal or Notebook

I know we said “Let’s move beyond an old fashioned hand written prayer list”, but it’s the foundation of prayer list ideas.
I love the idea of keeping a good old-fashioned handwritten prayer journal or prayer notebook. There’s just something so meaningful about writing our prayers down by hand, keeping everything in one place, and being able to physically cross out requests as they’re answered.
Keep your old school prayer list on a sheet of paper tucked into your Bible- you could even use it as your Bible reading bookmark. The key here is to keep it front and center so you are intentional about praying.
Another idea is to grab a fancy journal to keep all of your prayer requests in it. You could also use a composition book or notebook. Imagine having a prayer list journal FULL OF PRAYERS to your Heavenly Father!
Idea #2- Color Code Your Prayer List

Here are some very cool prayer list ideas to help you color code. You won’t be able to implement all of these ideas, because it would get confusing, but you can definitely glean some ideas that appeal to you.
- Assign each family member a color. Use that color ink when listing prayer requests for them. This helps you easily see that you have prayed for them at a glance.
- Use different colors for different categories of requests. For example, blue for health needs, red for financial needs, green for spiritual growth, etc. Seeing the colors will help trigger what to pray about.
- Highlight answered prayers in your family prayer list in yellow (for example). This allows you to visually celebrate when God moves! AMEN!
- Mark urgent or pressing requests in orange (for example). This grabs your attention to prioritize praying for pressing issues.
- Write request dates in light gray and answered prayer dates in a bright color like pink. You’ll see the timespans more clearly.
- Color code your list by days of the week. Use a different color each day to track what you prayed for on that day.
- Use colored dot stickers or highlighters to mark requests you’ve prayed over recently. Easily see what’s been covered.

Idea #3- Add Dates
Adding dates to your prayer requests is such a simple but powerful idea. It really transforms your prayer list from just a running list of needs to a meaningful record of your journey of faith where you can see how quickly God answered your prayer or if you are in a season of waiting.
When you first write down a prayer request, go ahead and put the date right next to it. Then each time you pray for that item again, you’ll be reminded of how long it’s been on your heart. Seeing a prayer that you’ve been lifting up for 3 weeks or 3 months will reinvigorate your persistence and faith.
Knowing when you originally prayed for something gives you a richer perspective, and when the answer finally comes, you get to write the date down next to it and relish in how God fulfilled your request!
Looking back over weeks or years in your prayer journal, you’ll see the timing of God at work. Certain requests that seemed urgent at the time may end up taking years to unfold according to God’s wisdom. Other prayers will be answered surprisingly quickly.
Having the timeline documented reinforces that God is at work both in immediate ways and over the long haul. Your faith will be strengthened as you reflect on the when and how of God’s working in your life.
Idea #4- Use a Digital Prayer App

If you are the type that always uses your phone, then a digital prayer app might be for you.
Using a prayer list app to keep your prayer list can be really handy for several reasons:
- A prayer app keeps all your requests organized neatly in one place. You can easily add new prayers, categorize them with tags or labels, and check them off as answered without worrying about keeping papers in order. Everything is digitally stored and searchable.
- Prayer apps also make your list accessible anywhere (unless you drain your battery). You can pull up your prayer concerns on your phone no matter where you are and pray through your list. It’s easier to pray consistently when your list is always available.
- Many prayer apps will also remind you to pray at set times with an alarm or notification. The notifications can nudge you to revisit your list and focus on praying versus just rapid-fire listing requests. The reminders promote thoughtfulness.
- Some apps provide resources like Scriptures to inspire your prayers.
- Finally, certain apps allow you to share your list and pray in community with others. You can send requests and sync up lists with accountability partners in prayer.
The convenience and tools of a digital prayer list really can step up your prayer game!

Idea #5- Convert your Planner into a Prayer Journal
Did you know you can turn your planner into a cherished record of your prayer life with God? You can create an authentic and creative conversation with God starting with making your prayers and prayer list ideas in your daily planner.
Here are some amazing ideas to convert your planner into a creative prayer list.
- Use each daily page or space as a place for an intimate talk with God. Write out your prayers in paragraph form like you’re having a real conversation or writing a letter. Let scriptures, worship lyrics, gratitudes and petitions flow together seamlessly in writing. Decorate around the edges with journaling, tip ins or printable ephemera.
- Replace hurried to-do lists with thoughtful reflection questions or prompts like “Today I feel…” or “Lord, help me…” to drive meaningful prayer. Doodle, color or journal to process emotions as you pour out your heart.
- Repurpose your planner as a praise journal. Praise is also a valid part of prayer. Write paragraphs on all the ways God has blessed you, scriptures that inspire you, answers to prayer. Let it overflow with gratitude.
- Make each week’s spread a different prayer focus – your family, friends, church, community, country. Use colors, stickers and creative lettering to customize.
- See each page as a sacred space to unload burdens, seek guidance, or offer praise. Let the planner become the glue that holds your brokenness and blessings together in prayer.
- Jot down a prayer in your daily planner- a prayer journal doesn’t have to be a big production. This is really important. Don’t let perfectionism stop you from writing.
- The goal is to turn the planner into a cherished record of your walk with God. Let it capture an authentic, creative conversation that nourishes your soul.
Be inspired to turn planning into purposeful praying!
Idea #6- Use a Prayer Template
Using a prayer list template can be a great way to incorporate diversity and purpose into your prayer time.
One of those prayer list printables you can use is the ACTS prayer templates. I’ve got a free ACTS Prayer Template you can download for free.
Idea #7- Use Prayer Index Cards
Prayer cards are small cards or pieces of paper that you write specific prayer requests on, usually one request per card. You keep the cards together and use them to guide your prayer time by praying over each request thoughtfully. They help you stay organized, focused, and faithful in your prayer life.
You can check off cards when the prayers are answered, which allows you to tangibly see God at work. New prayer topics can be continuously added as old ones are addressed. The portable size of index cards makes it convenient to carry them wherever you go to pray throughout the day.

Idea #8- Pray A to Z
Praying A to Z is a fun method of prayer that associates prayer topics with each letter of the alphabet. To do this, you would make a list of 26 different prayer focuses, with one topic assigned to each letter A through Z.
For example, you could pick “Adoration” for A, “Blessings” for B, “Confession” for C, and so on. You could also make each letter the first letter of your loved ones.
When you set aside time to pray an A to Z session, work through your list praying for each topic as you land on its corresponding letter. The goal is to thoroughly work through the entire alphabet. Refresh the topics assigned to each letter as needed.
Idea #9- Pray a Map
One of the most wonderful ways we prayed for the local area around our church was by using a map. As we would evangelize our local neighborhoods, we would mark the street off with a pen and use that map to pray for the community, that street, and to pray for those who we came in contact with whose lives were touched as we shared the gospel with them.
Praying by using a map is as easy as highlighting the area that you have prayed for. I would recommend mounting your map on cardboard and keeping it visible so you can pray and highlight at will.
You can use a world map to pray for continents, regions, or issues that burden your heart – anything from wars, disasters, famines, country leaders, and the people of a nation.
Let locations and your journeys prompt prayers related to your experiences and concerns. Let your map serve as an ongoing prayer reminder.
Your prayer map can be a creative new prayer list for church for you to use.
Idea #10- Write a Prayer Letter
A prayer letter is writing a personal letter to God, sharing what is on your heart and mind- your thoughts, emotions, confession, requests and praises. Some people find writing out their prayers to God in a letter format helps them be more focused and intentional in their communication with the Lord.
The letters can be dated and kept together in a prayer journal to look back on. Writing prayer letters gives another dimension to one’s relationship with God.
