Inside: 15 Short Prayers to Pray in Time of Need.
You barrel through your morning without reading your Bible or taking a moment to pray.
“This isn’t the way it’s supposed to be” you mutter under your breath. You wake up in the morning and rush into your day. You feed your family, grab your car keys and run out the door to get things done.
In times like that, Do you lose confidence when you should be going to God’s throne room with confidence?
Look, creative sister- life happens. When I become consciously aware of my lack, I like to take a moment and utter what I call S.O.S. prayers. S.O.S. prayers are short spur of the moment prayers where I call on God with all urgency for whatever the need is at that moment.
Yes, my day might be crazy and rushed- but I am always able to look to God for guidance and direction.
It only takes a shift of heart and mind to look to God- even when everything is chaos around me.

Are Short Prayers Effective?
Are short prayers effective? Are long form prayers only acceptable in the eyes of God? To answer that, let’s take a look at the second half of James 5:16.
The effectual fervent prayer of a righteous man availeth much.
The effectual fervent prayer of a righteous man availeth much.
Do you see a prescribed length of time mentioned here? Do you see a prescribed amount of time where you are commanded to pray for a certain length? The only clincher mentioned here about a prayer being effectual is that it comes from a RIGHTEOUS man (or woman). Praise the Lord for a woman of God who is living righteously before her God. There is absolutely nothing wrong with incorporating short daily prayers into your prayer life!
Praying Sister, God hears your prayers, no matter the length.
Are Short Prayers Biblical?
There will be many that say that short prayers from the BIble aren’t biblical or spiritual. Sadly, this viewpoint is reminiscent of the Pharisees who lengthened the hems of their garment to look more holy to those that would see them in the temple.
Praying long prayers won’t make you more spiritual. If you’re worried about your prayers looking spiritual, chances are you are worrying more about what people will think instead of simply talking to God.
The goal of prayer is to draw near and touch the heart of God.
Examples of Short Prayers by Jesus
Before we begin with our 15 condensed prayers for you, I want to share with a you 3 short prayers of Jesus in Matthew 26 that he uttered right before he was about to be crucified.
In these short and concise prayers, we can see the heart of Jesus yielding Himself to the will of God in his humanity.
May we have a heart to pray fervent S.O.S. prayers like our Lord and Saviour.
“Oh Father, let this cup pass from me.” (verse 39)
“Not as I will, but as you will” (verse 39)
“Father, let this cup pass from me”
“Thy will be done”
If you’re wondering if God likes short prayers, the answer is YES because Jesus was our example of how to pray!
Short Prayers for you to Pray In Time of Need
Let’s dive into these short prayers for you to pray in time of need. May these short 3 word prayers (and 4 word prayers) be a lesson to us that short and concise prayers are just as effective as their long form counterparts.
Lord, Have Mercy
A wonderful prayer for you or someone else who needs on the spot mercy. This prayer is reminiscent of Hebrews 4:16 where it says: Let us then approach God’s throne of grace with confidence, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help us in our time of need.
Lord, Show Your Power
God told Elijah to go and stand outside because He was going to make something known to him. God brought wind, an earthquake and a fire but God was not in those things. God was in a still small voice. However God shows himself on your behalf, you can rest assured that he is showing His power on your behalf.
Lord, Into Your Hands
This beautiful prayer of Jesus in the garden of Gethsemane showed the surrender of humanity into the hands og God just before the Lord’s crucifixion. May we have the same heart in giving up our own desires and relinquishing all things to the Lord.
Lord, Save Me
As Jesus walked on the water, Peter also wanted to join him in his excitement. What happened next would be a lesson recorded in the word of God that would show us our earthly and eternal dependence on him.
Lord, I will Follow
Is something distracting you from fully following the Lord whole heartedly?
I’m reminded of the song that firmly states the heart of the author, Sadhu Sundar Singh, who brought the gospel to the mountains of India. It was there that he first said, ,
I have decided to follow Jesus. No turning back. No turning back.
Lord, Open my Eyes
This prayer comes directly from Ephesians 1:18 where Paul’s heart for the Ephesians was that their eyes would be opened to know the hope of God’s calling. Is there dimness in your calling or direction? Ask God to open your spiritual eyes.
Lord, Steady my Heart
Even though this prayer isn’t verbatim in the Bible, the sentiment is definitely there. Philippians 4:6 states: “Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. We can have steadiness of heart knowing that we He commands us to not be anxious and to bring all of our cares to Him.
God, Help me
I’ve uttered many “God, help me” prayers over the years to the Lord. One particular time, my car had broke down and I was walking to my Bible school dorm. As I neared home, a man asked for directions to get to a nearby phone booth. What happened next… well you can imagine, but the S.O.S. prayers that were screamed at the top of my lungs were definitely prayers of help. I was able to get away with no harm, thank the Lord. Psalm 46:1 comes to mind where it says: “God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.”
Lord, Thank you
When Jesus healed the 10 lepers in Luke 17:11-19 , there was only one that came back to thank Him. Oh that we have have hearts that not only are thankful, but that express our praise and thanks to our God for all that He has done!
Lord, Only Your Will (Your Will be Done)
With a multitude of voices vying for the attention of Christian believers, it’s important to yield to only God and His will for us. Thankfully we have the Spirit of God that will lead us and guide us. “Howbeit when he, the Spirit of truth, is come, he will guide you into all truth: for he shall not speak of himself; but whatsoever he shall hear, that shall he speak: and he will shew you things to come.” -John 16:13
Lord, Lead me
As God’s sheep, we need His leading. We have a wonderful assurance that He will take us where we need to be. He shall feed his flock like a shepherd: he shall gather the lambs with his arm, and carry them in his bosom, and shall gently lead those that are with young.
Lord, Change my Heart
When Eddie Espinoza looked inward, he realized he was complacent in his faith. He penned this beautiful prayer in song that has become a classic amongst the church. I’ve frequently made this short praise song my prayer many times.
Change my heart oh God
Make it ever true
Change my heart oh God
May I be like you
You are the potter, I am the clay
Mold me and make me
This is what I pray
Romans 12: 2 is a beautiful prayer when the flesh and satan are tempting you to go back to your old nature. God has transformed you from carnal to spiritual. “And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God.
Lord, I Yield Myself
The entire chapter of Romans 6 deals with yielding ourselves to God and not to the flesh. When you feel the desire to to lean towards the carnal, pray for God to take the desire away and to yield yourself to God.
God, Give Me Wisdom
If you need spiritual wisdom, you can definitely do so! James 1:5, “If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that giveth to all men liberally, and upbraideth not; and it shall be given him.”
