From the fall of Adam and Eve, God has always reached out in relationship to mankind to redeem. Redemption to relationship is the focus of the Holy Bible from Genesis chapter 1 through Revelation. The most important relationship that we can have is with our lord God.

Some of us Christians have had bad relationship examples as we grew up in our family relationships. Even as Christians, we can find ourselves falling into the same faulty patterns that we viewed as children even though we are children of God. Fortunately, such things as these can be dealt with by the holy spirit as we love god and submit our wills to our Heavenly Father and learn to love our own husbands.

We are human beings who faultily tried to find our own way until god’s love was revealed to us and we formed a personal relationship with Him. We cannot have our own preconceived idea of what our own understanding of a perfect love looks like. That will lead us astray.

That manner of love in our new relationship with God can only be founded upon the word of God. The same way that God has put a divine order in the family unit, such as who is the head of the wife, the head of the husband and the head of the church, the will of God has specific orders as he relates to His own body, his believers and the church.

Why is it Important to Have a Relationship with God?

One of the first Bible relationship verses that focused on redemption was in Genesis when the first sacrifice was made for Adam’s sin in Genesis 3:21 where God made clothing for Adam and Eve.

It all pointed to redemption. which can only be accomplished through God’s unfailing love and not in our own good works

The Call to Relationship with God

It’s more than accepting Christ and that being the end all goal that we have in life. God brings us in right relationship with Him. God has always wanted to have a relationship with us, His children.

Who had a relationship with God in the Bible?

Who had a relationship with God in the Bible? Those that immediately come to mind are Adam, Abraham, Moses and Jacob. In the New Testament there are the disciples and the Apostle Paul.

Boundaries are Healthy in a Relationship

Boundaries are an integral part of healthy relationships because they help to maintain a balance between you and your partner. They also help minimize conflict, because they establish a precedent for what you both expect from each other.

Bible Verses about Relationship with God

Included below is a quick synopsis of each quality of relationship that we experience as we walk with the Lord and a Scripture. There are hundreds, even thousands, of other qualities that can be found in the Bible that speak of a relationsip that we have with God that we can observe.

These are ones that I have chosen to add to this article.

A Relationship with Care

The historical context of Jeremiah 29:11 was the prophet Jeremiah was speaking these words to the Jews who had both lived under exile to Babylon and dominated by the Egyptians. God states that He thinks thoughts of peace and to give us an expected end. He also promises us an eternity with Him in Heaven. This Scripture speaks of the relationship that God wanted to have with the Jews and ultimately with us in redemption.

Jeremiah 29:11 “For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, saith the Lord, thoughts of peace, and not of evil, to give you an expected end.”

A Relationship with a Caretaker

Psalm 95 is known as a Psalm of praise with a powerful invitation to God’s people to humble themselves and kneel before God in worship.

The relationship of sheep and his people is mentioned in Psalm 23 where the shepherd cares for his flock and protects them. It’s a beautiful representation of God caring for His children.

Psalm 95:6-7 “O come, let us worship and bow down: let us kneel before the Lord our maker. For he is our God; and we are the people of his pasture, and the sheep of his hand. To day if ye will hear his voice,”

A Relationship with Protection

What beautiful wisdom flows from the book of Proverbs that shares of God being our protector in who we can take refuge at any time. Towers were used for defense in war. When you need spiritual protection from the devil and his wiles, you can find protection in God’s strength

Proverbs 18:10 The name of the Lord is a strong tower: the righteous runneth into it, and is safe.

A Relationship that Dwells Not in a Building but in our Hearts

In the Old Testament, God dwelled in the tabernacle and then in the temple. With the ushering in of grace at Pentecost, God wanted to dwell in the hearts of His people. You can also check out Isaiah 66:1,Acts:7:49, Eph 3:17, and 2 Cor. 6:16 for reference. It’s amazing that God doesn’t want to dwell in a building made of hands, but in the heart of believers!

Leviticus 26:11-12 And I set my tabernacle among you: and my soul shall not abhor you. And I will walk among you, and will be your God, and ye shall be my people.

A Relationship of Faithfulness

As God calls us to faithfulness in serving Him alone, he will also be faithful to us. We cannot divide our love between God and the world. In this scripture, if we serve the world we are despising God.

No man can serve two masters: for either he will hate the one, and love the other; or else he will hold to the one, and despise the other. Ye cannot serve God and mammon.

A Relationship that Offers Abundant Mercy

One thing we can always count on for God to supply is His abundant mercy. Here in Psalm 36, it’s stated that there is so much mercy that it reaches to the clouds. It also states in Psalm 103:12 that God’s mercy is so abundant that it reaches from the east to the west. If you travel in one direction, you would never get to the point where you would have to turn around and go another direction. You would continually go west or east for a lifetime. That is how much mercy God has for you, Sweet Sister! What a beautiful quality of God’s character in His relationship with us!

Psalm 36:5 Thy mercy, O LORD, is in the heavens; and thy faithfulness reacheth unto the clouds.

A Relationship that Offers Divine Rest

One of the most beautiful promises we have in our relationship with God is during times when we are overwhelmed and have heavy burdens, we can come to Jesus and be assured that He will give us rest.

Experienced horses, donkeys, mules and oxen were often yoked with younger animals to teach them how to plow fields and pull wagons. In the same manner, we are yoked together with Christ. He walks with us and makes the load lighter. We can cast our burden on Him and He will lighten our load.

I first heard this song when we were missionaries to the Philippines and it calls the believer to lift up their hands to God and come to Jesus to relieve their heavy burdens.

Matthew 11:28-30 Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.

A Relationship of Sacrifice

In relationships, sacrifice is beneficial. God gave His only begotten Son for us and showed us a living sacrifice in action.

As stated above, not only did God sacrifice His son for us, we receive everlasting life when we believe in Him. God isn’t only concerned for us on our earthly journey, but ultimately on our final destination. He has prepared a heavenly home for us!

John 3:16 For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.

A Relationship that Compares to No Other Love

Do you know of any man who would give his life for literally anyone on the face of this earth. I doubt you can find one. But Jesus would. He counts you and I so valuable that He would die if we were the only ones. What a beautiful testimony of His caring for us!

John 15:13 Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends.

As expounded on above, let’s look at the quality of God’s love. There is NO greater love. None. Absolutely none. And I’ll just say it once more for good measure. None.

A Relationship that Exists in the Present Moment

Some might say the Bible was written so long ago- how can the truths in it apply to us today? How can we still be in relationship with Him?

God doesn’t make any mistakes. In Romans 5:8, it speaks about him commending his love towards us while we were yet sinners. The word commendeth/commended means to show, prove, establish and exhibit and it’s a PRESENT DAY LOVE!

Romans 5:8 But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.

A Love that is Undeserved

One of the most wonderful characteristics of our relationship with God is undeserved love. We don’t deserve His love at all. We are deserving more than hell yet God gifted us eternal life. Amazing!

Romans 6:23 For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.

A Love that We Cannot Be Seperated From

In Romans 8:38-39, we see the things that can NOT separate us from the the Lord. There are many things that separate worldly relations. None of them can touch the relationship that we have with the Lord.

Romans 8:38-39 For I am persuaded, that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor powers, nor things present, nor things to come, Nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature, shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord

A Love that Demands Faithfulness

God has shown his faithfulness to his followers time and time again. He has never turned His back on anyone or been unfaithful. God

The word jealous in this verse means to burn with zeal, to desire earnestly, to strive after, to busy oneself with. There is a type of jealousy that is fleshly and if pushed to the limit would kill. The character of our God is perfect. His jealousy is not fleshly. But He takes his pursuance of your soul very seriously.

2 Corinthians 11:2-3 For I am jealous over you with godly jealousy: for I have espoused you to one husband, that I may present you as a chaste virgin to Christ.

A Relationship that Makes Us Dead to Sin and Alive in Christ

Praise the Lord for His purifying power that makes us dead to sin and alive to Him!

Ephesians 2:4-5 But God, who is rich in mercy, for his great love wherewith he loved us, Even when we were dead in sins, hath quickened us together with Christ, (by grace ye are saved;)

A Relationship That Brings Us Near

What a wonderful blessing that we are near to God by the blood of Jesus Christ. When we follow Him, He will not push us away.

Ephesians 2:13 But now in Christ Jesus ye who sometimes were far off are made nigh by the blood of Christ.

A Relationship that Gives us Boldness in our God

The relationship between the Lord and His followers brings a boldness, in being His children, that we can come boldly in prayer into the throneroom of God when we need mercy

A Relationship that Corrects Us in the Spirit of Love

What kind of love would it be if God allowed to do good deeds for our own glory instead of His glory? Thank the Lord that He corrects us when we need it in the spirit of love!

Hebrews 12:6 For whom the Lord loveth he chasteneth, and scourgeth every son whom he receiveth.

A Relationship that Gives Grace to the Humble of Heart

God resists the proud but gives grace to the humble. When we submit our hearts before Him, we can be assured that He will give us grace. When Jesus walked the earth, He was the true example of humility. He would never ask us to do something that He hasn’t done.

James 4:6-10 But he giveth more grace. Wherefore he saith, God resisteth the proud, but giveth grace unto the humble. Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you. Draw nigh to God, and he will draw nigh to you. Cleanse your hands, ye sinners; and purify your hearts, ye double minded. Be afflicted, and mourn, and weep: let your laughter be turned to mourning, and your joy to heaviness. Humble yourselves in the sight of the Lord, and he shall lift you up.

A Relationship where God is Faithful to Forgive and Cleanse

We’ve talked about being humble before the Lord in this article. How beautiful is it that if we come to God and confess our sins He:

• He is faithful
• He is faithful
• He will forgive us
• He will cleanse us from all unrighteousness

I John 1:9 If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.

A Love where God Dwells in Us and Perfects Us

When we accept Christ into our life, His Holy Spirit dwells in us and perfects us. Praise the Lord

1 John 4:12 No man hath seen God at any time. If we love one another, God dwelleth in us, and his love is perfected in us.

A Relationship that Loves us More than we Could Ever Love

We stood before God guilty, in our filthy rags and sin. Yet God loved us first, allowing us to love Him back. This, sweet Sister, is amazing!

1 John 4:19 We love him, because he first loved us.

A Relationship where Joy can be Full and Evident

The Apostle John spoke to the believers sharing the words of Lord Jesus that their lives could be full of joy by dwelling in the truth of Christ.

John 15:11 These things have I spoken unto you, that my joy might remain in you, and that your joy might be full.

A Relationship with True Fellowship

It’s so reassuring to know that we can have true fellowship with the God of the Universe who has created the earth and mankind. As God walked with Adam in the garden of Eden, He wants to walk in relationship with us.

I John 1:3-4 That which we have seen and heard declare we unto you, that ye also may have fellowship with us: and truly our fellowship is with the Father, and with his Son Jesus Christ. And these things write we unto you, that your joy may be full.

A Relationship Where God Listens

I’m reminded in Psalm 115:2-8 (Go ahead and read it because it’s good!) where David speaks of the idols of the day. The idols were made of silver or gold, and were the works of men’s hands. They had mouths but didn’t speak, eyes but can’t see, ears but can’t hear. They have noses but can’t smell. The list goes on…. We are so blessed to have a relationship with a God who LISTENS to us when we pray.

1 Peter 3:12 For the eyes of the Lord are over the righteous, and his ears are open unto their prayers: but the face of the Lord is against them that do evil.

A Relationship that Offers a Fresh Start

The relationship we have with God offers us the opportunity to hit that divine reset button and we can become a new creation in Christ.

2 Corinthians 5:17-18 Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new.

A Relationship with Compassion

The word compassion in Micah 7:19 in the Greek means: to love, love deeply, have mercy, be compassionate, have tender affection, have compassion. What a beautiful heart of compassion the Father has for us!

Micah 7:19 He will turn again, he will have compassion upon us; he will subdue our iniquities; and thou wilt cast all their sins into the depths of the sea.

A Relationship that Offers Divine Peace

The world can promise to offer the peace of God (or rather a false intimate relationship but leaves us feeling empty. Jesus promises a divine peace that can compare to nothing else.

John 14:27 Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you: not as the world giveth, give I unto you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid.

A Relationship That Begins and Ends with Love

1 Corinthians 1-13 Though I speak with the tongues of men and of angels, and have not charity, I am become as sounding brass, or a tinkling cymbal. And though I have the gift of prophecy, and understand all mysteries, and all knowledge; and though I have all faith, so that I could remove mountains, and have not charity, I am nothing. And though I bestow all my goods to feed the poor, and though I give my body to be burned, and have not charity, it profiteth me nothing.
