Inside: A Prayer of Communion for Reflection During the Lord’s Supper
My first communion, as well as the last, was a time of reverence and awe before the Lord. I know many congregations celebrate communion weekly, but we choose to do it occasionally so it’s a solemn moment. We also don’t want communion to become something we do out of habit where we become overfamiliar with it . We always want it to be special.
Through the act of communion, we get to fellowship and have a relationship with God. When we celebrate communion we are commemorating what Jesus Christ did for us on the cross and remember his sacrifice.
Communion is so important to us as believers in Jesus. It is a great way to strengthen our love for Christ.
A prayer for communion is significant because it is when we can express our gratitude to God for giving His only begotten son.
Taking communion is sacred and holy, as Paul commanded that it is not to be taken lightly. In 1 Corinthians 11:27-32, it was explained that whoever eats the bread or drinks the cup of the Lord in an unworthy manner will be guilty concerning the body and blood of the Lord.
It’s a very serious thing.
According to the epistle, we as Christians, should examine our life carefully, because we will be judged for partaking unworthily.
Our communion prayer of thanksgiving is sacred because we are entering into the presence of Jesus with reverence and awe.
Here are some prayers that you can use for celebrating the Lord’s supper.
Any of the following can also be used for a communion prayer at home as well.
A Prayer Before Holy Communion
Just like how we pray before we eat, we are to pray before partaking in the bread and the wine. This is the Lord’s Supper or the Lord’s table where we eat with the people of God. In order for someone to share the blood and body of Jesus Christ, he/she should acknowledge his/her sins and unworthiness through repentance and confession in prayer, and joyfully acknowledge the sweetness of the resurrection.
In 1 Corinthians 11:24, Jesus gave thanks
And when he had given thanks, he brake it, and said, Take, eat: this is my body, which is broken for you: this do in remembrance of me.1 Corinthians 11:24
Prayer before communion helps us meditate for this gift of remembrance.
Here is an example of prayer that you can pray before communion.
Dear Almighty Father God, I thank you for your love and for your grace. Today I am remembering the sacrifice of Jesus Christ, the death that gave me life. Please examine my heart today and help me to be sorrowful for my sins. I am coming to you today with humility to ask for forgiveness. I do not deserve life for I am a sinner. I have sinned against you and you took the pain for me. Because of your love, I am saved. Because of your love, I am able to exist in this world. I am nothing without Jesus Christ. I pray that as I take this bread and wine, I will remember my sins that put you on that cross and repent from them. Help me surrender my life to you and love you with all of my heart. Always fill my thoughts with the holy spirit. Make me sober so that in everything that I do, I can think about you. I love you. In Jesus’ name, I pray, AMEN.
A Prayer After Holy Communion
Prayer after communion is similar to how we say thank you to our parents after receiving a gift on special occasions. It is a time where we recognize Jesus Christ as the savior of all and enter to His peace. We are expressing gratitude to the Holy Eucharist that signifies the new covenant, Christ’s promise to His people. This can be done through thanksgiving after communion. He is to be praised for his divine mercy, love, forgiveness, and holiness.
Here is an example of a prayer after communion:
Dear Almighty Father God, my soul is grateful for the blood that you have poured for us through Christ Jesus. I am here to adore and honor Jesus Christ as my savior, the creator of the heavens and of the earth. Without Jesus, I am nothing. I give thanks to you for breathing life for me and my family. I honor your holiness, Father. You are my everything for you have given me grace. Forgive me for my sins, and give me the holy spirit to repent from them. Please save me from temptations and remove my uncleanness. Help me offer my whole life to you. In Jesus’ name, I pray, AMEN.
Lastly, after taking communion, a thanksgiving prayer at communion is a beautiful way to close out taking the Lord’s supper.
Dear Almighty Father God, I am grateful for the cross. I can not fathom your love for me. It is an unconditional love that no one can replace. I thank you for giving as the standard of what real love is. Please help me understand the love Jesus Christ has showered to me so I can also act out with love. May this be written in my heart and mind. Purify my soul, oh God and give me strength to follow your commandments. I am unworthy of your lamb, Father. Words are not enough to express my gratitude to you. After all, that humanity has done to sin against you, you still gave us your son and lavished us his mighty power. Thank you for not handing us to the devil, thank you for your mercy that I would always be in awe of. I love you so much Father, in Jesus’ name, I pray, AMEN.
Sister, I hope that you have found a prayer of communion that is suitable for you as you celebrate the Lord’s Supper!
