100 Word of the Year Ideas for Christian Women

What’s Inside: Choose your word of the year founded upon Scripture with these 100+ word of the year ideas

I first became aware of choosing a “word of the year” many years ago on social media. In faith groups online, women were choosing a themed word from the Bible to focus on for growth, change and prayer into the New year. The specific word chosen is one to be focused on for the entirety of the year.

It’s a brilliant idea. Gone are the New Year’s resolutions of years past and replaced with a focus word for the upcoming year based upon the Bible.

In November and December, I’ve seen tons of questions about how to choose the word of the year and I wanted to help bring some clarity to the question to help you in choosing a word catered to your need to help you draw near to God and grow in Him.

Don’t forget to scroll down and check out my 101 word of the year prompts that are founded upon Scripture below.

Helpful Ideas for Choosing Your Word of the Year

Begin your search for choosing a word of the year in prayer. Don’t be hasty.

Go to the word of God

How is God dealing with you? Do you see a recurring theme in your life? Something you need to improve upon in your life? Is there some truth to dwell on. A characteristic of God’s character that you want to focus on? Jot those things down on a piece of paper and see if anything stands out to you.

Give yourself grace

As followers of Jesus, we walk in grace. Your word of the year should inspire you to draw near to but aving a word of the year is not a ‘law’ that you must keep.

God honors your desire to want to please Him, but if you are having trouble finding a word of the year idea, it isn’t a reason to feel condemned. Your WOTY is a place to find growth in grace. Throw the perfectionism out the window.

How to Choose a Word of the Year

Debra Hofland and I share a Facebook group together (Prayerful Planner) and she had some amazing suggestions on how to choose a word of the year and has so kindly given me permission to share:

Debra says, “

May I suggest as you do your daily Bible reading in 2022, that you will run across words or phrases that make you pause & perhaps mull on … jot those words with verse reference on a sticky note in the back of your planner. I title my list “Candidates for Next Year’s WOTY” (word of the year).

Then next Nov or Dec, refer back to those verses & actually study them; I do a quick read thru of the verses on my list & find that some of them have dropped off my radar so I’m usually left with three or four potential WOTY “candidates” — those get the full verse mapping treatment. It never fails that one of the verses will be QUITE OBVIOUSLY my next WOTY (verse). Voila!

From there I always have a list of OTHER (related) verses from my selected verse — I pick 12 — I randomly “assign” one verse to each of the coming months of the year. {Sometimes I go with a synonym of my “word” — oh, the layers of salt & flavor in God’s Word!! — so much turns up when you do an actual study of a Bible passage.} I write the verse & a little phrase on a sticky note & slap it into one of the blank pages at the end/beginning of every month. Every month then I have a Bible passage that I study, related to my verse/word of the year, adding more depth & meaning & uncovering even MORE about God’s love for me! More than enough to chew on ALL YEAR.”

Here are some amazing images of Debra’s word studies from the previous year:
