What’s Inside: This Quick and Easy Tutorial will show you how to Make Tassel Embroidery Floss Bookmarks for your Bible, Journal or Planner

Sometimes they are practical- you use them to mark your place for your bible study, or to mark your place where God’s word spoke to your heart.

And sometimes they make you smile because they decorate your bible in a way that only a creative would understand.

That’s why I’m sharing this tutorial with you today showing you how to make tassel embroidery floss bookmarks for your bible.

The main supply needed to make these cute tassels is a simple skein of your favorite color of embroidery thread.

Whatever your reason,  I’d love for you to join me in making these cute embellishments.

Supplies Needed to Make Embroidery Floss Tassel Bookmarks

Embroidery Floss– make sure to buy floss that comes in skeins- not in a ball. (Technically you could, but that would be more work- and I love easy!) Do not remove the paper wrap from the outside of the embroidery floss.  We will use this to our advantage in just a sec.

Needles (optional-make  it easier to sew in ends)
You can use ordinary embroidery needles or  Silk Ribbon Needles for larger threads  (more about that in a sec!)

Embroidery Floss

A word about different types of  embroidery floss.

Ordinary embroidery floss is fine and dainty looking and is the embroidery thread you most commonly see and use.  It looks delicate but is very durable since it’s made from cotton.  You can find ordinary embroidery thread in solids, variegated and ombre tones to add more color, design and beauty to your tassels.

Another type of pearl cotton that is thicker and more durable looking is called pearl cotton number 5.  It is thicker than ordinary embroidery thread and doesn’t strip into plies (technically it doesn’t but you can strip it down and it will look wavy- not something I would recommend.)  It also comes in various variegated patterns.

Step by Step DIY Embroidery Floss Bookmark

Leave your embroidery skein in tact.  Do not pull of the paper wrapper.  Carefully pull about 30 inches out of the skein and cut it off. Cut your 30 inch long piece into two pieces of 26 inches and 4 inches.   If you are using your tassel for a seperate bookmark like my washi tape bookmark, your length can be significantly less.

Fold your skein in half and take the cut off portion of your embroidery thread and loop it through the end of both of your embroidery skeins.  Tie a knot making sure that your knot is in the center of your thread and that the ends are approximately the same length.

Remove your paper and using about 4 inches of your leftover thread,  tie a double knot at the neck of the tassel.  Bring the knot back into the tassel with your needle, hiding the ends.   Insert the scissors into both end loops and cut while pulling the floss tightly.

Measure your bible and make a knot a centimeter or two below that to keep the bookmark from slipping out and being lost.

It is my hope and prayer that these these bible journaling bookmarks will be a blessing to you in some small way with your bible study, bible reading and bible journaling.
