Printable Serenity Prayer As a young girl, I opened the hinged metal box that sat on top of the collapsible sewing machine in the living room.  Inside was a piece of wrinkled vellum folded in half that crinkled when I opened it.  It was the Serenity Prayer in an old fashioned script.

It sat in the tin for safe keeping.

I knew that it must have been saved for good reason and later learned that the focus of the serenity prayer was serenity, or peace.

Serenity is the state or quality of being serene, calm, or tranquil; sereneness.  Just reading the definition makes me think about the peace that only the Lord Jesus offers His believers.

Facts about the AA Serenity Prayer

What is a Serenity Prayer?

The serenity prayer was written by Reinhold Niebuhr who followed in the footsteps of his father and became a minister.  There has been much debate over the authorship,  but it was finally attributed to Niebuhr. In 1948.

it was adopted by Alcoholics Anonymous and became very well known as the AA Serenity Prayer, the Alcoholics Anonymous prayer and the 12 step serenity prayer.

Serenity Courage Wisdom Image What defines serenity and how can I apply it in my life?

The best way to define serenity is from the Bible.

Jesus told the disciples,  Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you: not as the world giveth, give I unto you.  Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid.

The word peace here is the Greek word eirēnē  which means security, safety, prosperity and felicity.  Another meaning is the Messiah’s peace that leads to salvation.

True peace can only come from the Creator of your soul.  He made you and knows exactly what you have need of.

The Serenity Prayer verse by verse

God grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change,
the courage to change the things I can,
and the wisdom to know the difference.

Accept the Things You Cannot Change

Let’s break the serenity prayer down verse by verse.

The first line of the serenity prayer asks God to grant the serenity to accept the things that we cannot change.  We live in the ‘name it and claim it gospel where very popular teachers and preachers will promote that we can have anything and do anything by simply believing.  The name it and claim it gospel also focuses on hardships not coming to the child of God.

This is not the gospel.

If that were the case,  Paul the apostle wouldn’t have feared for his life while running from those who wanted to kill him.   He also wouldn’t have written to the churches who cared for him out of their lack of material goods.  (They were poor)

There is divine peace when we yield our self will and desireto control our lives to our maker.

When my husband nearly died in 2012, I was overwhelmed with divine peace when I finally gave my burden to the Lord and allowed God to take control.  (You can read more about that experience in how to guard your heart against anxiety.)

There are some things in life that we cannot change.

Courage to Change the Things You Can

On the flip side, there are things that we CAN control and we make those choices daily.

We can choose to better our lives.  We can choose to follow the Lord.  We can choose to better ourselves and deepen our faith.

We can not simply throw something in the lap of God expecting Him to change everything for us.

God wants effort on our part.

The Bible says that faith without works is dead.  Works,  or doing things, will accompany our faith.

Wisdom to Know the Difference

The third portion of the Serenity prayer is the clincher, dear Sister.

It’s having the knowledge to being able to differentiate between the things that we cannot change and the things we can.

That differentiation of wisdom can only be bestowed upon us if we yield ourselves to our Maker and gain that information from God’s word.

In a nutshell,  the three focus points of the serenity prayer are serenity, courage and wisdom.

Is the Serenity Prayer in the Bible?

God grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change,
the courage to change the things I can and the wisdom
to know the difference.
Living one day at a time enjoying one moment at a time;
accepting hardship as a pathway to peace
taking, as Jesus did, this sinful world as it is,
not as I would have it;
trusting that you will make all things right
if I surrender to Your will;
so that I may be reasonably happy in this life and
supremely happy with you forever in the next.
