Bible Highlighting Guide

Why Every Christian Needs a Bible Color Code Chart

  • Overwhelmed by Information: A highlighted Bible addresses the challenge of processing and retaining vast amounts of information in the Bible.
  • Lack of Organization– Organizing a highlighting bible system-when you are color coding the Bible, you are organizing recurring themes.
  • Inconsistent Study: When you learn how to how to highlight your bible, it brings structure and consistency to Bible study.
  • Lack of Focus: Talk about how a highlighting system can help maintain focus on key themes and messages.

Step-by-Step Guide to Creating Your Bible Highlighting System

  1. Gather Supplies: When you learn how to color code your Bible, the first thing is to gather your supplies. You’ll need your Bible, highlighters and crayons. How many highlighters or crayons will you be using?
  2. Make a list of necessary materials (highlighters, pens, markers, sticky notes). It’s best to choose highlighters that won’t bleed to the other side of the page. One of my personal favorites to use in highlighting is these Easy Crayola Twistables (see my review HERE to see how they appear on Bible pages). They come in a multitude of colors Another favorite I like to use is gel highlighters. The only fault in gel highlighters is that they do leave a bit of film on the page. A nice pen that doesn’t bleed through pages is a great thing to have and also sticky notes if you want to write notes in your Bible. I love lined sticky notes and colorful ones to write notes on my Bible pages.
  3. Develop a Color Key That Meets Your Needs
This is the most difficult part of making a bible highlighting color code. Your topics could very well be different from your previous Bible with your personal needs. Write down the topics that are important to you and give it a few days to settle.
    • I would recommend writing down the topics that are important to you when you make your own Bible highlighting guide For myself, I made
    • Provide examples of what each color represents.
  4. Start Highlighting Small:
    • Choose a specific book or set of chapters to begin.
    • Highlight key verses and expand gradually.
  5. Review and Adjust:
    • Regularly review your highlighting to ensure it meets your needs.
    • Be open to adjusting categories and colors as needed.

Overcoming Common Challenges

  • Avoiding Over-Highlighting: Who is guilty of over highlighting their Bible only with a myriad of colors, only to find out that it’s a jumble of confusing color. I’m raising my hand! Having a highlighting plan beforehand will help this!
  • Maintaining Consistency: Importance of sticking to your color key for clarity. The Bible isn’t a quick read. It takes, on the average, a year to read. That;s why it’s important to stay disciplined and consistent in Bible highlighting.
  • Finding Time: Strategies for integrating highlighting into regular study routines.
  • Forgetting your colors: It’s easy to forget your theme colors. That’s why it’s beneficial to keep a handy dandy color chart nearby.

Integrating Your Bible Highlighting System into Daily Study

  • Daily Devotions: Incorporating Bible highlighting into daily reading is simple and effective. Choose one or two key themes to focus on each week. As you read, use your chosen colors to mark relevant verses. This approach turns your daily reading into an active study session, helping you spot patterns and connections.

You can also highlight verses that speak to you personally, creating a visual journey of your spiritual growth.

Over time, your highlighted Bible becomes a personalized roadmap of your faith, making future readings even more meaningful and insightful.
  • Thematic Studies: Bible highlighting helps you create a visual map of specific topics throughout your Bible. Choose a color for your theme and mark relevant verses as you read. This method helps you quickly identify and connect related passages across different books, revealing patterns and deeper insights.

As your color-coded theme grows, you’ll develop a comprehensive view of how that topic is addressed throughout the Bible, enriching your study and deepening your theological understanding.
