Benefits of Having an Organized Prayer Life

Effective Strategies on How to Organize Your Prayer Life

Here are some amazing ways that you can employ to help you organize your prayer life.
Set Aside a Dedicated Prayer Time
Setting aside a dedicated prayer time will look different for every person. And that’s okay.
I’m a morning person and like to schedule my prayer time for the morning when I’m wide awake. I like to start my day with a fresh start and focused on God.
I do recommend a morning prayer time but if you’re a night owl, then maybe your prayer time is best in the evening or late night.
The important thing is that you schedule an appointment with God, keep that appointment, and make it a priority.
Is it wrong to block off a specific time for God? Your argument might be that you don’t want to put God on schedule… but let me ask you…
How was it working before when you didn’t actively try to organize your prayer life? Chances are it wasn’t happening and that’s why you’re here. And sweet Sis, that’s okay. Our desire to organize is because we need improvement and want to spend time with God. And there is nothing wrong with that.
Setting aside time for prayer is crucial because it promotes consistency and regularity toward your journey towards a healthy prayer life. You are more likely to make prayer a priority and stick with it if you set up a time for it. You can deepen your relationship with God and increase your faith by making prayer a regular part of your day.
Making time for prayer each day will also help you become more aware of God’s presence in your life, which will enhance your sense of serenity and wellbeing. Making better decisions can also be aided by gaining a greater understanding of the situations and events in your life.
Find a Quiet and Comfortable Place
Finding a quiet place might be difficult for Mom’s of littles or for those who have a busy household. Just do your best. And if you can’t find a quiet place, try going for a walk, shutting yourself in the bathroom or asking your husband to give you a 5 minute reprieve to pray. Give yourself grace for this season of life.
Your prayer closet could be a seat at a desk or in your favorite sofa or chair. It could be while kneeling at the side of your bed. None of these places are wrong.
Here’s how finding a quiet and comfortable place can help you organize and experience a more effective prayer life:
- Consistency: I can’t tell you of the joy I felt when I had my quiet time desk in Germany. It had everything I needed at an arms length and beckoned for me to daily spend time with God at it’s seat. Having a committed place of prayer facilitates the development of making prayer a habit. that may be simpler to uphold over time..
- Prioritization: When you’ve made a specific place of prayer, it prepares your heart t spend time there daily. Your heart knows/will soon know that the practice of prayer is a significant and worthwhile component of your day because you have set up a place for it.
- Focus: Setting out a fixed place of prayer enables you to concentrate on your prayers without being interrupted because your mind knows that sitting/kneeling in your quiet place means you are going to pray to God.
Use a Prayer Journal/Prayer Notebook
A prayer journal can be a lined notebook where you write each prayer request or you can have prayer journal sections of various topics. (Read more in this article about prayer topics and index card prayers)
Here’s how using a prayer journal can help your prayer life be more organized:
- Helps you keep track of your prayers: Using a prayer journal helps you keep track of all the prayers you have prayed and all of the prayer needs our Heavenly Father has answered. Having a written record of your prayers helps you to see God’s faithfulness has answered your prayers so you can give thanks for all of His blessings.
- Focus: Writing out your prayers can assist you with focusing your heart on God and becoming more aware of His presence in your life.

A prayer journal is a record of your spiritual journey, and it can be a valuable tool for reflecting on your growth over time.
- Helps you be more accountable: By recording your prayers, you can examine your motives for God and pray according to God’s will.
Make Prayer a Habit
Making prayer a regular habit is one of the best ways your prayer life can be more organized. You can’t have an organized prayer life if you don’t have a life of prayer. Here’s how making prayer a habit can help you::
- Habit- Habits are formed by repeating an action over and over again. The more you pray, the more it becomes a habit- and the easier it becomes to stick with it.
- Reduces distractions: Making prayer a regular habit helps to reduce distractions and focus better.
- Creates discipline: Discipline is definitely a trait which helps organization.
It makes it easier to stick with it:
Be Consistent
Try to be consistent in your prayer life, even if that means starting small and gradually increasing the time you spend in prayer.
It helps to make prayer a regular part of your daily routine: When you are consistent in your prayer life, you are more likely to make prayer a regular part of your daily routine, which can help you to develop a deeper relationship with God.
Topics for Prayer
Using topics for prayer is a great way to be comprehensive about your prayer subjects and can be used with many of the prayer strategies. Topics for prayers are basically when you assign a specific topic to a day of the week, a month, depending on your preference. The following categories found below can be tailored to meet your own prayer needs.
- Monday- Husband
- Tuesday- My children/needs of family
- Wednesday- Church leaders and church family
- Thursday- My Own Personal Needs
- Friday- Missionaries and the lost
- Saturday- My community
- Sunday- Praying Scripture
You can change topics and days of your prayer cards according to your own preferences/needs.
Index Card Prayers
Back in the day, I used to carry my coupons in a carrier and this idea carried over from that.
Each coupon divider represents the different categories of your choice (see Topics of prayer above) and you can write each prayer request on an index card and file it under the correct topic. As each index card prayer is prayed for, move it to the back of each category so all prayer commitments (each card) are in the prayer rotation, making it a great way to keep track of prayer requests. It’s kind of like having your very own prayer prompter.
House Prayers
House prayers are my favorite- and practical way to pray, and do, techically, qualifying them for a bit of organized prayer. Check out these fresh ideas:
Kitchen sink prayers
In all of my years of living, one of my favorite things about a good kitchen is the window over the kitchen sink. I’ve spent many an hour daydreaming there and one day, realized it was a wonderful place to pray for my husband, my family, my church family and specific prayer requests. What a blessing that the drudgery of doing the dishes has turned into an altar of prayer.
Laundry prayers
Laundry prayers are a more specific type of prayer to do while folding laundry. While folding your laundry, say a prayer for the family member who each piece of laundry belongs to.
Believe you me- if you are mad at your husband, it’s hard to stay mad for very long if you are lobbing up a prayer request as you pray for him over 10 pair of socks, 7 undershirts and 8 pair of underwear.
House Cleaning Prayers
House cleaning prayers are similar to laundry prayers, but you are praying as you clean. Imagine praying over your household, lifting each one up in prayer asking God’s will to be done in their life as you sweep, mop and dust your home. Imagine the difference God can make in their life through you praying.
Using Acronyms for Praying
Acronyms provide a structure for your prayer life and are perfect for those who are learning to pray. They are great for both adults and young children as well.
Praying Acronym prayers is basically a guide for praying where a very memorable acronym is used to aid in praying.
Some examples are ACTS (adoration, confession, thanksgiving, supplication). There are many acronyms for praying and you can learn all about them in THIS blog post.
Another useful tool is the 5 finger method and really gives a great base for a very full prayer life. I have an article on that with a free printable that is great for both adults and kids.
Acronyms provide a structure for prayer, making it easier to focus on different aspects of prayer, help you stay on track and avoid getting distracted.
Prayer acronyms can serve as a reminder of specific things you want to pray for, and is the easiest way to remember to pray for both people and various needs.
Prayer Highlighting System
The prayer highlighting system is an easy way to organize your prayer life. It can be used with prayer journaling, a prayer notebook and prayer index cards. It’s simplicity is what makes it shine.
Write down your prayer list and pray over each item. When god answers your prayer, simply highlight through that prayer indicating God has answered. And, voilla! You will have a beautiful remembrance of God answering your prayers at a glance and the good things God has done- because it’s all highlighted.
Use Your Planner/Calendar
There are so many different ways to use a planner or calendar, but keeping it simple is always best.
Here’s how using a planner can help your prayer life be more organized
- Scheduling prayer: Using a planner allows you to schedule dedicated hourly/daily/weekly/monthly/prayer times making it a priority.

- Priority: A digital prayer app can help you make prayer a priority because you can get daily notifications reminding you to pray throughout the day.
- Consistency: Notifications help you become consistent as it sends out daily reminders. You can also use a prayer app with friends which is super motivating to get your daily prayer time.

- Community: Praying in a group with in real life friends or those met online can really be a blessing for those who find it challenging to pray alone and who want to feel more connected. It’s also great for prayer challenges for prayer partners, church prayer groups and a church small group
Use Sticky Notes
Using sticky notes is one of my favorite ways yo keep my prayer life organized. Here’s how:
- Visibility: Who doesn’t love neon pink, green and orange sticky notes? You can use one or all colors for your written prayers and stick them in your notebook r Bible. You can keep specific prayers in the forefront of your mind and quickly remember to pray for them by writing down the prayers on sticky notes and keeping them in a visible spot.
- Increases focus: You can easily find all of your prayer requests at a glance which can help you to stay on track and avoid getting distracted.

A Call to Spirit Led Prayer
Sisters, I would be remiss if I didn’t speak up about this last subject.
I’m an organizer. I like all things wrapped up in a tidy little box- and that could include my spiritual life, including prayer and Bible reading.
The truth is… I like to be in control. (Maybe you do too!)
Let’s read this Scripture together that the Apostle Paul wrote to the church at Rome:
Likewise the Spirit also helpeth our infirmities: for we know not what we should pray for as we ought: but the Spirit itself maketh intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered.
Romans 8:26-27
There are times when all of our efforts to organize our spiritual life can go out the window because God has greater plans than what we could ever fathom.
As you can see in the Scripture above in Romans that our prayers must be Spirit borne and led.
Sometimes we don’t have the words to say when we pray and the Spirit prays through us.
It’s important not to put God on a piece of paper and not let Him move outside of that boundary. We need to allow the Lord the freedom He needs to move as He wills.
In all of our organizing, let’s not leave the Holy Spirit out of our prayer life.
